The second local derby this Saturday evening in the Brazilian top flight is a Sao Paulo clash between Sao Paulo and Corinthians at Morumbi, with not only bragging rights at stake, but also an important three points up for grabs for both teams.
Sao Paulo will be seeking to record a fourth Serie A win on the trot following recent wins over Atletico PR, Vitoria and most impressive of all, a 1-0 win away at league leaders, Flamengo, last time out.
Sao Paulo’s performances and results have been solid all season on home turf as well, with a record of 4-2-0 10/4 under their belts to date, but this unbeaten record extends to 16 matches without defeat which goes back into last season. Forward Nene (6 goals) is the most likely anytime scorer for the hosts.
Corinthians make the short trip over to face Sao Paulo for Saturday evening’s local derby on the back of an important 2-0 home win over Botafogo which halted a dismal run of four matches without a victory.
However, Corinthians’ problems away from home are still very evident as they’ve now gone five matches without a win on the road, having lost four of these with losses incurred at Atletico Mineiro, Internacional, Flamengo and most hurtful of all, fourth from bottom club, Bahia.
An away record of 1-1-4 6/6 has threatened to spoil Corinthians hopes of claiming a Copa Libertadores spot, and they really need to get something from this clash to stay in the hunt for a top six place.
The momentum appears to be with Sao Paulo heading into this derby, but as it’s a local tussle, I’ll give the quarter-ball on the home side here…
