Sao Paulo could steal a march on the teams at the top of the Brazilian Serie A when they take on bottom half outfit, Vitoria, at their Estádio Cícero Pompeu de Toledo on Tuesday night, as all three points here would lift the hosts up into second spot.
Sao Paulo have enjoyed a successful start to their new campaign having lost just once in their opening 11 matches of the Brazilian top flight season, which was a 3-1 loss away at sixth placed Palmeiras, but their form on home turf has been solid to date.
A home record of 3-2-0 7/4 has seen the hosts remain unbeaten and includes wins against Parana, Santos and Botafogo, along with taking points off Atletico Mineiro and Internacional, while forwards Diego Souza and penalty taker, Nene (4 goals apiece) will be keen for Sao Paulo to build upon their 1-0 away win at Atletico PR last time out.
Vitoria come into this clash having secured just one league win from their last five matches overall, which was a 1-0 home win over fellow bottom half outfit, Chapecoense, but have also fallen foul to defeats against Internacional and Santos in recent weeks.
A point in a 0-0 draw at Corinthians will have been a welcome boost for manager, Vagner Mancini’s side, but an overall away record of 1-2-3 8/12 still requires further improvement, and it seems unlikely they’ll be able to achieve this away at Sao Paulo tonight.
A solitary away win at Vasco da Gama has been their yield on the road so far, and indeed, Vitoria have recorded just two away wins from their last 12 trips, which is not an encouraging pedigree.
