Sassuolo Preview – Can Sassuolo follow up their win last time out and potentially move into the top half of the table?
As one of the smaller clubs in Serie A Sassuolo are always looking to guarantee their safety first and foremost. Now in their seventh season the in the top-flight, it’s fair to say they are an established club at this level but they are realistic enough to understand just how competitive the bottom half of the table is which is evidenced by the fact they finished 11th last season but only five points clear of the bottom three. It looks set to be a similar story this time around. Their win at home to Bologna before the international break moves them on to 13 points and into 13th spot. It means Sassuolo are two points off 10th place and four points clear of the final relegation spot.
There’s no doubting who continues to be Sassuolo’s top performer. Domenico Berardi has scored seven goals in 10 league games and is on course to make this is most prolific season yet. The 16 goals he managed in 2013/14 is his current best total but he’s bounced back to form in a big way following some disappointing campaigns by his own standards.

There’s not a team in Serie A who are in better form than Lazio at the minute. Simone Inzaghi’s team have won four games on the bounce to move up to third spot in the league. The last time they won five straight Serie A games was back in 2017 which is an indication of just how well they have been doing. It’s such fine margins in this league, though, as Inzaghi’s men were staring down the barrel of a heavy defeat at home to Atalanta before rescuing a point having come back from three goals down. Since they have kicked on to defeat Fiorentina, Torini, Milan and Lecce.
As good form as Berardi is in, Lazio have their own red hot strike in Ciro Immobile. The Italian striker leads the scoring charts in Serie A with 14 goals in 12 games. It’s a tremendous return thus far and is also propped up by goals in the Europa League. With Italy looking ahead to Euro 2020 it’s got the potential to be a memorable season for a player many feel has not quite lived up to what many thought he was capable of achieving.

It’s a game that you feel Sassuolo will be looking on as something of a bonus due to Lazio’s current form and position in the table. That said, the hosts have a habit of making life difficult for visiting teams here and are coming off the back of that good win. Lazio have been excellent since rescuing a point at home to Atalanta and will be full of confidence for this.
I would be keen on an away win in this but think that the safer selection is for there to be a few goals. Sassuolo and Lazio games are the second and third highest scoring on average in Serie A this season at well over three goals per game. Over 3.5 is worth a bet as a result.
