Preview: All eyes fall on Mapei Stadium, as the 2021/22 Serie A season concludes with AC Milan aiming to secure the point they need to be crowned champions of Italy for the first time since 2011. Can Sassuolo produce another underdog victory, though, that would be well received by the other half of Milan?

Sassuolo – Another top-half finish sole focus?

While, understandably, much of the focus ahead of the final round falls on Milan’s bid for a first league title since 2011, Sassuolo have been quick to assure neutrals and Inter Milan alike that they aren’t going to assume the role of subservient hosts on Sunday. If anything the noise emanating from the club is that they are going to thrive in their role as potential title crashers, and there is enough evidence to see why.

This season, the Neroverdi have beaten near enough anyone worth their salt. Even Milan. A 3-1 scoreline at San Siro in November arguably the highlight of their season so far. They can now claim a famous league double, one that would have them remembered for years to come but also, and this is going under the radar, possibly see them earn their third successive top-half finish should Torino falter elsewhere.

Key Stat: Only Juventus, courtesy of Moise Kean’s 88-minute winner, have beaten Sassuolo in their past six Serie A home matches (W3 D2). A period which had seen them host Atalanta, Fiorentina (both 2-1 wins) and Roma (2-2 draw).

AC Milan – Rossoneri odds-on to end Scudetto drought?

A run of five consecutive victories – with this their longest such streak since winning seven on the bounce from September to October last year – means a point on the last day will seal the club’s first league title in 11 years. Acquiring that point could be much easier said than done, though, for Sunday’s opponents boast the scalps of Atalanta, Inter, Juventus, Lazio and even the Rossoneri themselves in 2021/22.

Nevertheless, it would constitute an epic shock were this season’s Scudetto not to be draped in the colours of Milan. It is now 15 games since Stefano Pioli’s team tasted defeat in Serie A, while no side has gotten the better of them away from the San Siro since Fiorentina edged a seven-goal classic in Florence last November. Unsurprisingly then, no team holds a better away record in Italy this season: W13 D4 L1.

Key Stat: AC Milan have kept a clean sheet in 8 of their last 10 Serie A matches (W8 D2), but did concede in each of their previous two away fixtures (2-1 win vs Lazio, 3-1 win vs Hellas Verona).

Sassuolo Vs AC Milan Betting Advice

If Stefano Pioli could hand-pick a fixture in which to go and claim the point required to make mathematically certain of the club’s first league title in 11 years, I am fairly confident a visit to Mapei Stadium would rank near the very bottom of his list. Sassuolo have already beaten most of the country’s top sides this season, Milan included, and have the added incentive of knowing a win could secure them a top-ten finish.

Sassuolo Vs AC Milan – Key Facts:

  • Each of the past four Serie A meetings between these teams has seen three or more goals and both teams score. Sassuolo were 3-1 victors at San Siro in November.
  • There has been Over 2.5 Goals in 26 of Sassuolo’s last 31 league games. Meanwhile, AC Milan are unbeaten on their travels in 11 (W8 D3), winning four of the last five.
  • Sassuolo would score in each of their last eight Serie A home games. Milan conceded in both of their last two away matches but still managed to record wins against Lazio and Hellas Verona.

This Milan side are made of sterner stuff though. They are unbeaten, home or away, since January and lost one of 18 away league games this season. Only Lazio and Hellas Verona could even muster a goal against them across the last ten fixtures. Underpinning the size of the task in front of Sassuolo. Nerves are a factor, though, and it is worth noting Sassuolo did score in their last eight at home (all saw BTTS).
