Preview: The brief revival that Schalke threatened has hit the buffer, so the last thing The Royal Blues want to see right now is Bayern Munich. The latter are seeking their eight consecutive Bundesliga triumph over The Royal Blues, who were on the receiving end of an 8-0 hammering when these sides met earlier in the season in Munich.

Schalke – Back to reality for Bundesliga’s bottom club?

The Royal Blues (W1 D4 L12) have spent much of this season languishing towards the bottom of the Bundesliga, but had briefly threatened to mount a revival earlier this month when ending their 30-game winless run in the competition with a stunning rout of Hoffenheim here in Gelsenkichen. Reality has since bit hard though, slumping to successive defeats thereafter to leave the club rooted to the foot of the table.

Wednesday’s agonising 2-1 scoreline at home to survival rivals FC Koln will have hurt the most. Schalke losing with almost the final kick of the game to now trail The Billy Goats, and with it the relegation play-off, by eight points. That bitter result followed on the back of a 3-1 defeat on the road at Eintracht Frankfurt, a game which saw young American forward Matthew Hoppe net for the third game in succession.

Hoppe bagged a hat-trick in that astonishing result against Hoffenheim and, despite not yet reaching double figures for competitive appearances, is already among the first names on the team sheet. As is Moroccan Amine Harit, who was back to something like his best last time. Both have their work cut out, however, compensating for a defence which has now conceded, on average, 2.59 goals per game this term.

Bayern Munich – Flick’s men still riding their luck on the road?

Germany’s record champions wrapped up the Hinrunde – first half of the season – as the Bundesliga’s outright leaders, maintaining a four point advantage over the chasing contingent with a narrow 1-0 win at FC Augsburg that had a distinct air of good fortune about it. A contest settled by Robert Lewandowski’s early penalty and the post, which denied the hosts a second-half leveller from the same spot.

So, and not for the first time, Bayern (W12 D3 L2) produced a suspect performance on their travels and, in the end, were indebted to some good fortune for coming away with all three points. Remarkably, that was their first away clean sheet of the season, having conceded in all eight previous eight encounters. In fact, only five other teams have leaked more away goals in 2020/21 than their 14.

Even trips to Bielefeld and Koln, teams in close proximity to Sunday’s opponents, Hansi Flick’s side found a way of conceding. That could mean another nervy 90 minutes lies ahead. Then again, Bayern could just as easily make light work of a fixture they thrive in. With September’s 8-0 romp at Allianz Arena still relatively fresh in the minds, Die Rotten have won all the past seven league meetings by a 26-2 aggregate.

Schalke Vs Bayern Munich Betting Advice

There can simply be no escaping how dominant Bayern Munich have been against Schalke. Seven straight Bundesliga wins whilst scoring 26 times, on average nearly four goals per match, having last lost a league meeting in December 2010 (2-0) – winning 19 and drawing three of the 22 subsequent top-flight meetings. Then we have to factor in how this current Schalke are enduring a torrid season.

Schalke Vs Bayern Munich – Key Facts:

  • Six goals from their last three Bundesliga games, netting in each fixture, is only two shy of the total Schalke managed across the first 14 rounds of the season.
  • Wednesday’s 1-0 victory away to FC Augsburg represented Bayern Munich‘s first away clean sheet of the campaign, doing so at the ninth attempt.
  • Schalke have gone 22 competitive matches without winning against Bayern Munich, last winning as the home side in December 2010 (D1 L9 since).

Although Bayern haven’t always convinced on their travels this season, that hasn’t stopped them amassing more away points than any other team (19 – W6 D1 L2). Yet they do tend to give teams a chance, conceding in eight of their nine away fixtures. Schalke, meanwhile, have now scored in three straight games, netting six in total, and so could, potentially, prevent a rare away Bayern clean sheet materialising.
