Schalke – Royal Blues already doomed?

It is all looking rather ominous for those of a Schalke (W1 D5 L13) persuasion. Just four clubs – Bayern, Bremen, Dortmund, and Leverkusen – have spent more seasons consecutively in the Bundesliga than the 30 of the Royal Blues. Put bluntly, their top-flight status is rapidly diminishing with every passing round, with only one team in Bundesliga history posting fewer points after 19 games than their current tally of eight.

Sadly, for a team that has won one league game all season while averaging a league-low 0.79 goals, the writing does appear to be on the wall. Having briefly hinted at a revival when securing their first win of the campaign at the fifteenth attempt, dismantling Hoffenheim 4-0 in Gelsenkirchen, they have since picked up one point from twelve to reside in last place, nine points adrift of the relegation play-off.

Last week’s 1-1 draw away to Werder Bremen, in which Schalke surrendered a slender lead with less than a quarter-of-an-hour remaining, did, at the very least, halt their three-match losing sequence. However the sight of second-place RB Leipzig, boasting the meanest defence in the division, is clearly far from ideal. Although Christian Gross has seen his side score in four of the past five league matches.

RB Leipzig – Three points depend on another shutout?

Julian Nagelsmann watched on with delight, although not before Leverkusen spurned one last big chance, as the final whistle blew on last week’s contest at the Red Bull Arena between the teams who begun the round level on points in second and third. A brilliant individual effort from Christopher Nkunku ensuring a 1-0 win that keeps RB Leipzig (W11 D5 L3) seven points behind leaders Bayern Munich.

It marked a swift return to winning ways for a side that was surprisingly beaten 3-2 away in Mainz in their previous league outing – that their second successive away league game which failed to produce a win, having so far won only three of nine away fixtures in 2020-21 (W3 D2 L4). A far cry from their exceptional record on their own patch in which they’ve dropped only four of a possible 30 points at home.

The gritty win over top-four rivals Leverkusen also brought up a ninth clean sheet of the campaign, no team has kept more in the Bundesliga this season, while that was their fourth 1-0 success which is as many as they managed across the previous three seasons combined. In fact, all three away victories this term came when Nagelsmann’s charges kept their hosts at bay (vs Augsburg, Hoffenheim and Stuttgart).

Schalke Vs RB Leipzig Betting Advice

Recent meetings haven’t even been a contest, certainly not competitive ones, with RB Leipzig winning each of the last two while scoring nine unanswered goals. This latest encounter could further compound Schalke’s misery, the Royal Blues firmly entrenched in the Bundesliga relegation zone after winning one game all season and collecting 30 points less than their guests, who only have Bayern above them in the standings.

Schalke Vs RB Leipzig – Key Facts:

  • Five of the seven Bundesliga home losses Schalke have suffered this season were to nil, while all three away wins for RB Leipzig came when they didn’t concede a goal.
  • No team is averaging fewer goals across the 2020-21 Bundesliga season than Schalke (0.79), while no one has kept more clean sheets than the nine of RB Leipzig.
  • The last two league meetings were both won by RB Leipzig, following up a resounding 5-0 win here at Veltins-Arena in 2019-20 by thumping Schalke 4-0 at home earlier this season.

Last season’s corresponding fixture resulted in Schalke’s heaviest ever Bundesliga defeat in a home fixture, losing 5-0 as Christopher Nkunku, still fresh from his match winning heroics last time out, laid on four of the goals. All three of their away wins this season have been rather more modest though (1-0 x2, 2-0). Meanwhile, Schalke, the Bundesliga’s lowest scorers, sustained five of their seven home losses to nil.
