There was a remarkable Six Nations fixture between England and Scotland last year. Scotland shredded a 31 point deficit in the match at Twickenham to end up drawing 38-38. After an opening weekend defeat for both nations in 2020, who will get the win at Murrayfield?

Bullish Scotland can rattle England again

In 2018 when Scotland played host to England, the host nation collected a 25-13 victory in the match. That was their first success over England since 2008. Last year at Twickenham Scotland looked to be on a path to a heavy defeat after England tore them apart in the opening 40 minutes.

But Scotland turned the game on its head in the second period and ended up collecting a draw, which to them, having been 31 points down in the match, would have felt like a win. On the opening weekend of the 2020 Six Nations, Scotland fell to a 19-12 defeat away in Ireland.

But Scotland were well in the match in Dublin, surprising many. The only thing that let Scotland down on the day was some wasteful finishing. Indeed Scotland were on top for a huge chunk of the game but couldn’t find their incisive attacking edge. The most notable thing was how well Scotland performed up front against the Irish pack, who on paper, look a lot better.

England have to be ready for anything

After their disappointing World Cup Final loss to South Africa last year, England had the chance to produce a big statement on the opening weekend of the 2020 Six nations. They were in Paris for a difficult away game.

Things fell badly apart for England in that match again as they got their kicking tactics wrong and there were just individual errors all over the place.

They looked a far cry from the team who had dominated New Zealand in the World Cup semi finals. Now, this is a must-win game for England, who have already seen a Grand Slam chance this season go down.

The big change in the England line up is Willi Heinz who replacing Ben Youngs at scrum half. In total England make five changes from the starting line up from their loss in France.

England will know that Scotland will do everything they can just to disrupt them. It’s probably not going to be a big flourishing game of attacking brilliance. It will, more likely, be a war of attrition at the end of the day.

England have taken just three wins from their last seven trips to Murrayfield so there are vulnerabilities there. Especially with the Red Rose’s confidence seemingly having deserted them since winning their World Cup semi final against the All Blacks.

Scotland vs England Betting Advice

Scotland were surprisingly sharp out in Dublin against Ireland last weekend. They were not overpowered up front, which was a massively surprising aspect of their game. This is interesting with the Scots having lost three of their last seven on home turf against England.

Key Facts – Scotland vs England Betting Tip

  • Scotland narrowly lost away to Ireland last weekend
  • Scotland are unbeaten in two Six Nations matches against England (W1 D1)
  • England have won only three of their last seven trips to Murrayfield

England looks far from rocksteady in their defence and far from rock steady in their confidence. There are going to be cracks there, especially with the partisan crown grinding them down. Weather, where stormy winds are expected on Saturday, could play a huge part in keeping this a tight game. Scotland may well be able to handle a +8 handicap.
