Scotland Women V Argentina Women

Wednesday 19 June 2019 – 20:00 Kick-Off

International, Women’s World Cup

Pick: Scotland to WIN to NIL – 29/20 WilliamHill

There is the potential for one of these sides to progress into the knockout phase of the competition as one of the four available best third-place teams, but that would only be a realistic possibility with victory inside the Parc des Princes in Paris on Wednesday.

Scotland are the more likely to achieve their objective it seems, priced at 11/20 for the win. An Argentina win is available at 9/2 while the draw has some appeal at 3/1 taking into account that neither has come close to a victory so far.

Scotland Preview

It has been a valiant showing at these finals, although it doesn’t count for anything when you don’t put points on the board. Successive 2-1 losses to Japan and England at least makes the picture very clear for Scotland: win and a place in the next round could be yours depending on how other results go; lose or draw, and it’s early elimination.

Scotland should be confident of acquiring the win needed, too. They are ranked 17 places higher than their opponents, have more wins in 2019 (4 v 1), and have at least scored at this tournament (twice!). The one aspect of their game which will need improving is defensively.

Both England and Japan created plenty of chances against them and although you could put that down to facing stiffer opposition, Scotland also struggled to shut out lesser teams in qualifying. Just two clean sheets in eight qualifiers, versus teams either similarly ranked or worse (in some cases a lot worse) than Argentina, is a concern.

If the South Americans do manage to score, it would leave Scotland needing to achieve what Japan and England couldn’t do between them, which is put two goals past arguably the best goalkeeper at the tournament in Vanina Correra. Coach Shelley Kerr will no doubt be aware of this and should, you would like to think, be instructing her players to remain patient and focused throughout in order to avoid such a scenario.

Scotland to beat Argentina 1-0

Argentina Preview

It is remarkable that Argentina are still in a strong position to progress from what was a daunting group, as their form prior to these finals was nothing short of abysmal. From losing all three games at the Cup of Nations earlier in the year – to South Korea (5-0), New Zealand (2-0) and Australia (3-0) – to being potentially in the last-sixteen of a World Cup, is some transformation.

A draw might even be enough to secure a best third-place spot, but it also may not. A win would significantly enhance their claims but that would require them to abandon their cautious approach up until now, which has been to defend deep and in vast numbers. If that fails, they have been able to rely on their player of the tournament – the goalkeeper.

It has worked so far, to an extent, conceding only once and earning a point from two tough encounters. I don’t imagine them changing anything either, certainly not at kick-off. Their last five games against teams inside the world’s top 40 have resulted in heavy losses, with their last goal against such a side coming in a 3-1 loss to Brazil April 2018. So they dare not make this an open game.

Betting Conclusion

Scotland need a win. Argentina seem both unlikely and incapable of doing much attacking (they have had 3 shots on target in two games). If everything goes to plan, Scotland win this in a routine manner. Their rather poor defensive record is a concern, and had their opponents not been Argentina here then a bet on both teams scoring would have a lot of appeal.

But it is Argentina, a team that has failed to score in its last seven games versus those ranked inside the world’s top 40, against Australia, Brazil, Chile England, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. Even Scotland should end up on that list very soon.
