St Mirren Preview – Goodwin hoping history will repeat itself
St Mirren knocked out Aberdeen, Celtic and Hearts on their way to a famous Scottish Cup win in 2013 and manager Jim Goodwin is hoping history is about to be repeated..
The Buddies needed penalties to see of Motherwell in the last round having thrown away a three-goal advantage but they’ve since won at Fir Park in the league to confirm they are a much harder team to beat nowadays.
St Mirren have lost just one of their last seven matches in all competitions and haven’t lost any match by more than one goal since beaten 3-0 by Celtic at the start of December.
The team are still in a relegation dogfight but there is now genuine hope that the Paisley club will do enough to keep themselves out of a nail-biting finale to the campaign. They will certainly be hoping to do better than the last time they met Aberdeen in a Scottish Cup tie, losing 4-1 in 2018.
Defender Gary MacKenzie, striker Kyle Magennis and Ryan Flynn all remain sidelined for the Buddies and the game may come too soon for Stephen McGinn, though the captain is back in training.
Aberdeen Preview – Dons looking for more consistency
Like St Mirren, Aberdeen needed a replay to see off fellow Premiership opposition in the last round, though they managed to see off Kilmarnock in extra time without resorting to a penalty shoot-out. They haven’t won the Scottish Cup in 30 years..
Aberdeen have been maddeningly inconsistent and manager Derek McInnes has been juggling both formation and line-up in an attempt to hit on a winning formula. A goal drought throughout January saw them surrender third spot in the league but they’ve started scoring again and are dangerous opponents when everything falls into place.
Ryan Hedges will be missing this weekend but the manager is hopeful that both midfielders Craig Bryson and Funso Ojo, who missed last Saturday’s defeat by Ross County, will be fit enough to play a part. Either Curtis Main or Sam Cosgrove could make way if McInnes decides to adopt a more cautious approach.
The Dons have won just one of their last 10 matches in all competitions within 90 minutes but will fancy their chances of improving that record against largely goal-shy opposition.
