Group D leaders, Serbia, will entertain down and out Georgia at their Stadion Rajko Miti? in Belgrade on Monday night with the hosts looking to capture all three points which would seal their place for the World Cup finals in Russia next June.
Serbia now lead the group by just one point ahead of second placed Wales as they crashed to a 3-2 defeat away from home to Austria last time out, so they’ll no doubt be desperate to bounce back with a win here, as qualification lays firmly in their own hands.
The defeat to Austria has been their only loss in their last 12 World Cup qualifiers, and with a solid home record that stands at 2-2-0 9/5, which includes wins over Austria and Moldova, they’ll be keen to add Georgia to this list tonight. Watch out for Newcastle United striker, Mitrovic (6 goals) for the hosts this evening.
Visitors Georgia face an uphill task of getting anything out of their trip to Belgrade on Monday night as they’ll be facing a well-motivated home side, as well as a woeful run of 16 World Cup qualifiers without a win to their name as well.
In fact, Georgia’s last success in a World Cup qualifier was a 1-0 home win over Belarus back in September 2012, while their last away win was a 2-1 win at Kazakhstan back in 2005! Needless to say, their 15 matches away from home without a win in World Cup qualifiers is a very poor record indeed.
Despite appearing to have tightened up on their travels in this campaign with a record of 0-3-1 4/5 on the road, I’m expecting them to struggle to contain a highly motivated Serbia outfit here this evening.
