The round of last 16 in the Champions League continues on Wednesday night and my next pick features Spanish outfit, Sevilla, taking on Manchester United at the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán as both teams look to gain an advantage in this first leg.
Sevilla head into this important first encounter with their Premier League opposition on the back of three straight wins as they’ve beaten Leganes in the Copa del Rey, as well as registering back-to-back wins in La Liga with victories over Girona and Las Palmas.
Sevilla finished runners-up to Liverpool in Group E at the end of the group stage, although their results overall weren’t always entirely convincing; they remained unbeaten at home thanks to wins over Maribor and Spartak Moscow and a draw with Liverpool, with each game going over 2.5 goals.
Manchester United’s recent results have produced mixed returns in recent matches as they’ve collected wins at Yeovil Town and Huddersfield Town in the FA Cup, along with a Premier League victory over the aforementioned Huddersfield, but they’ve also suffered defeats at Tottenham and Newcastle United.
With the league title making an early exit across town to local rivals, Manchester City, United manager, Jose Mourinho, will be looking to pull another rabbit out of his hat on the european stage by winning the Champions League. However, it’s one thing to win the Europa League, but this is a serious step up in quality.
But whenever Mourinho has been faced with tall orders, he almost always reverts back to his ‘safety first’ approach – and that is not to lose. And this may well be the case tonight as the Champions League enters the knock-out phase, with a low-scoring game on the cards.
And we’ve already seen this in United’s last two away matches at this level at Benfica and Basel.
