Sevilla Preview

There may be most prestigious clubs left in this year’s Europa League, but none can match Sevilla’s trophy hall in the competition. The La Liga outfit have won it five times – two more than any other club and they are certainly not without a chance of making it a half dozen on the evidence we have seen so far this season. Pablo Machin’s men proved to be far too good for Lazio in the previous round, a tie that many thought would test them. It wasn’t to be the case as Sevilla came through with a comfortable 3-0 win on aggregate. It was a win and performance that will have the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea (favourites with the bookmakers) wary of their presence in the latter stages. Machin would also have been quietly pleased that his team drew one of the lesser teams left in the competition, although he will be well aware of the need for his players to approach the game in a professional way. The head coach will also be well aware of how much teams of a similar level tested Sevilla in the group stage of the competition so will be taking nothing from granted. And unlike the previous round, they will be playing at home in the first leg – something that teams can often find to be an advantage for the team playing away from home.

Key-Facts – Slavia Prague v Sevilla

  • Sevilla are once again the latter stages of the Europa League whilst this is the furthest Slavia have made it in nearly 20 years
  • The hosts have won six of their last seven home games in this competition without conceding
  • Slavia managed just four goals in the group stage – the lowest number of any qualified team

Slavia Prague Preview

Slavia Prague were eliminated in their attempt to qualify for this season’s Champions League group stage but as consolation prizes go, reaching the last-16 stage of the Europa League is not the worst one. The Czech champions are not regular visitors to the latter stages of European competition, with their best showing coming in 1995/96 when reaching the last four of the UEFA Cup. A quarter-final appearance four years later in the same competition is the last time they have went beyond a round of 16 but that was long before it was reformatted as the Europa League. Due to that, getting beyond the ground stage was an achievement in itself, filling second spot behind Zenit but knocking out the more fancied Bordeaux and Copenhagen before being drawn against Genk in the round of 32. Having drawn the first leg 0-0, it seemed like Slavia had missed their chance for progressing, however a fantastic 4-1 away in Belgium has seen them move on and looking to upset the much more fancied Sevilla. Domestically, they are on course to retain their league title (something they have not done in over a decade) but there’s no doubting they want to continue on their European adventure as well.

Sevilla v Slavia Prague Betting Advice

To put this tie in some sort of context, and their respective hopes of winning it, Sevilla are generally a 5/1 shot whilst Slavia Prague can be backed at 150/1 to go all the way. That’s the size of job the visitors face but it’s one they are likely to relish and they know that a reproduction of their excellent away performance in the previous round would ensure they are at least competitive against the Spanish club on Thursday.
Sevilla’s need for progression in this competition is getting greater by the round due to their inconsistencies in La Liga and being displaced from the final Champions League spot. They not sit five points off the top four and it’s looking like winning the Europa League may be their best route to making Europe’s premier club competition next season. To do that, a strong performance is needed at home against their Czech opponents. One thing we know about Sevilla is that they are generally very good at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan and they can get the start they need in this tie by defeating their opponents without conceding – a feat they have achieved in six of their last seven home games in this competition.
