The Champions League continues on Wednesday night and my next pick features a Sevilla outfit who will be out to avenge their heavy 5-1 defeat away to tonight’s opponents, Spartak Moscow in Russia last time out in Group E on match day three.
Match day four brings new optimism for the hosts though, as they now hold home advantage at their Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán, particularly having registered a convincing 3-0 home win over Maribor last time out on home turf in the Champions League.
The Spanish club’s recent form at this level has been pretty impressive in recent years as they’ve suffered just one defeat from their last seven Champions League ties, and have recorded wins over the likes of Juventus, Lyon and Leicester City during this period. Visitors Spartak Moscow bring an impressive 13-match unbeaten sequence in all competitions into Wednesday night’s encounter in Sevilla as they seek to get the upper hand once again on their Spanish counterparts, and in turn strengthen their claims for a top two finish in Group E.
Just a single point separates Spartak Moscow and Liverpool from Sevilla, so things are very tight in this group, with the exception of bottom club, Maribor, who have managed to earn just one point from the first three group matches to date.
This point came in a disappointing 1-1 draw in Slovenia for Spartak Moscow who, historically, have always tended to struggle away from home at this level. Indeed, Spartak have managed to achieve just three away wins from their last 25 away matches in the Champions League and previous european competitions.
