Preview: This weekend’s contest at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan between the in-form duo of Sevilla and Celta Vigo has developed into a must-win for the hosts, who are now four points behind leaders Real Madrid in the La Liga title race. Any neutrals watching on will be hoping they collect three points to keep things interesting at the top.

Sevilla – Pressure mounting after midweek slip?

Julen Lopetegui will feel his Sevilla side missed a golden opportunity at the Mestalla on Wednesday to apply serious pressure on long-time La Liga leaders Real Madrid. Even more so after leading inside the opening ten minutes, only to concede moments before the half-time interval in a contest that ended in stalemate. Consequently, Los Nervionenses remain four points adrift of the La Liga summit.

With almost no margin for error, the pressure is on ahead of this weekend’s fixture with a Celta Vigo outfit that should not be underestimated. Lopetegui’s men are in decent form nonetheless, unbeaten in seven (W5 D2) since their narrow loss at Real Madrid in late November. They have only lost twice all season and none whatsoever here in Seville, dropping just four of 30 points (W8 D2) at Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

Key Stat: The goals have dried up for Sevilla who must surely be keen on avoiding a fifth consecutive La Liga game scoring exactly once. The Andalusians haven’t managed more than one effort in seven of their past eight league contests but still won the majority of them (W5 D2 L1).

Celta Vigo – Galicians a more competent outfit on the road?

A third win in four bought Celta Vigo further breathing space, climbing to 12th in  La Liga on the back of Wednesday evening’s clinical display in the 2-0 victory at home to Osasuna. The Galicians are now closer to sixth placed Barcelona (six points) than they are the bottom three (nine) and, while a push for European qualification might be speculative, they can at least approach this fixture with an air of freedom.

That makes Eduardo Coudet’s team a dangerous proposition, if they weren’t already. This is, after all, is the fourth best travelling side in La Liga, with more points recorded on the road (15 – W4 D3 L3) than all barring Real Betis, Real Madrid and Sevilla. The Sky Blues are in decent form also, with it two defeats in ten (W4 D4) having lost only one of their last five away from home – by a solitary goal at Real Sociedad.

Key Stat: Across their last five league games, Celta Vigo have conceded a mere two goals. Just one of their previous eight opponents managed more than one versus them, while Real Madrid are the only hosts to do so all season.

Sevilla Vs Celta Vigo Betting Advice

It was a case of contrasting fortunes during the depleted midweek round, as Sevilla were frustratingly held away to Valencia hours after Celta Vigo had impressively accounted for Osasuna at Balaidos. The reality is both sides are in excellent recent form: Sevilla unbeaten in their last seven in La Liga, Celta Vigo one loss in five and only two in their last ten with both reverses coming via single-goal margins.

Sevilla Vs Celta Vigo – Key Facts:

  • Victory in this season’s reverse of this fixture, via a 1-0 scoreline, secured Sevilla their third successive win against Celta Vigo, who last won as the away side in 2015 (D1 L4 since).
  • We could very well see a repeat scoreline. Sevilla have won 1-0 in two of the past four La Liga home games while of Celta Vigo three away defeats so far, two were 1-0 scorelines.
  • It looks set to be a tight contest regardless. Sevilla have scored exactly one goal in each of the last four matches; Celta Vigo haven’t conceded more than once in any of their last five (just two in total).

So it all points to a competitive affair at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan. Sevilla have won each of their last three league encounters with Celta Vigo, who have only managed to avoid defeat on one of their last five visits to this ground. However, three of those losses were slender in margin (one goal), the other was last season’s contest in which Sevilla required a couple of late goals to turn a 2-2 draw into a 4-2 triumph.
