Sevilla Preview – Sixth straight win to top the group?

Europa League specialists Sevilla (W3 D1) are proving adept in Europe’s premier club competition as well, booking their place in the next round with two games to spare after dropping just two points so far. That did come in the reverse of this very fixture though, a game which saw the Spanish side content with sitting back and absorbing the home side’s attacks, which were sparse to say the least in London.

Against Chelsea on Matchday 1, Sevilla created next to nothing on the night and actually finished that game with a paltry 0.26 expected goals figure, after attempting just four shots. They did, however, see more of the ball, and can expect to do more of the same in Spain where their record at home in European competition is nothing short of exceptional, with no defeat in their last fourteen said matches (W12 D2).

Even more encouraging, then, has to be their record versus English opposition. The Andalusians tasting defeat in one of the last ten such meetings, are currently unbeaten in seven and have only ever lost once as the home side (W4 D2 L1). Furthermore, their recent form has also been excellent. Saturday’s gritty 1-0 La Liga win away to Huesca their fifth in as many matches and the fourth secured by a single goal margin.

Chelsea Preview – Lampard won’t want repeat of 2019/20?

The Blues (W3 D1) were unable to top their Champions League group last season, when finishing behind another club from Spain, Valencia, and ended up paying the ultimate price with the toughest possible last-sixteen tie with eventual winners Bayern Munich. Frank Lampard will therefore understand the upside of clinching top spot, and thus seeding for the 14 December draw, more than most.

Win in Spain on Wednesday, however, and top spot will be theirs without having to unduly concern themselves with what happens in their final fixture, at home to Krasnodar next week. Their form is such, with a six-match winning streak only recently ended this past weekend after a goalless draw with Tottenham, that they can make the trip to Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in reasonably confident mood.

Chelsea have also been the more impressive of the two sides, as despite amassing the same number of points so far (10) they have done so whilst scoring more (9 vs 6) and conceding less (1 vs 3). Two of their three victories coming by a three-goal margin or more, while they have scored a combined six across their two away outings, thrashing Krasnodar 4-0 in Russia but leaving it late in France with a 2-1 win against Rennes.

Sevilla Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

It has been relatively plain sailing for both clubs this season, only dropping points against each other in a dour goalless affair in West London on Matchday 1. Since then the pair have registered three wins on the spin, with Chelsea ahead on goal difference – though this would all change should Sevilla, boasting four wins in seven home games versus English opposition, prevail at their Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan.

Sevilla Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • The pair are both assured of their places in the last-sixteen draw, which takes place on 14 December, after only dropping points against each other on Matchday 1 (0-0).
  • Sevilla are on a five-game winning streak in all competitions, with four coming via a one-goal margin, while Chelsea‘s six-game winning run ended on Sunday with a 0-0 draw at home to Tottenham.
  • Chelsea have sustained only one loss in their past 12 visits to Spain (W3 D8 L1), however Sevilla are unbeaten in 14 consecutive home games in Europe (W12 D2).

With neither display much weakness with regards to recent form – Sevilla winning their last five matches and Chelsea unbeaten in eleven with six wins in seven – selecting a winner isn’t exactly straightforward. Even more so when taking into account just how immense they have been from a defensive standpoint: both are averaging under a goal-a-game conceded in 2020/21, hinting at another cagey encounter.
