Sevilla Preview – Lack of a cutting edge proving costly?

Last week’s encounter at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea won’t live long in the memory. In the grand scheme of things, it was a point gained for Sevilla who know their home record in Europe – winning 10 of the last 12 – stands up to scrutiny and could prove the deciding factor in whether they make it out of the group. In the short-term, it was another uninspiring showing from the 2019-20 Europa League winners.

The drab goalless affair in England has been sandwiched by La Liga defeats, losing by a goal to nil away to Granada and at home to Eibar. Fixtures in which they took maximum points from last term. Julen Lopetegui has now overseen a run of four games without a win (D2 L2). Which, if not already disconcerting, is compounded by 278 minutes without a goal since Luuk de Jong opened the scoring at the Camp Nou.

Unsurprisingly, goals have been scarce in general. All but one of their last five matches in all competitions have produced no more than a single goal. Under 1.5 Goals (12/5 with BetVictor) delivering in both home fixtures thus far, with the latest a shock 1-0 loss at the hands of an Eibar side which had begun the season with one win in six league games. A very harsh loss, it must be said (xG: SEV 2.07 – 0.12 EIB).

Draw & Both Teams to Score

Rennes Preview – Goals at both ends a running theme?

It was very nearly a dream introduction to Champions League football for Rennes, who are France’s 11th representative from Ligue 1. Making their maiden group stage appearance at home to Russian side FC Krasnodar, last season’s third-best outfit in France would establish a 1-0 lead from the penalty spot shortly after half-time only to be denied all three points following a wondergoal from the visitors.

The draw on Matchday 1 was harsh on Julien Stephan, the Rennes coach who had seen his side dominate for large swathes of the match, finishing it having generated more than twice as much xG as their guests (REN 2.64 – 1.29 KRA). However, if they were deserving of more last week, on Friday they were duly punished for a drop-off in performance, creating only one ‘big chance’ in a 2-1 loss to Angers.

Les Rouge et Noir are now in the midst of a troubling spell. Having begun the campaign by winning four of their first five games, all in Ligue 1, the Brittany club have since failed to win any of the last four in league and Europe (D2 L2) – with all four featuring goals at both ends of the pitch. Moreover, with one win from their last eight away games in European competition, their fortunes may not improve in Spain.

Sevilla Vs Rennes Betting Advice

The French side would actually return a win on their most recent visit to Seville, beating neighbouring rivals Real Betis 3-1 in the 2018-19 Europa League. There is no disputing who are the kings of Andalusia though, with Julen Lopetegui’s men coming home in fourth place in La Liga last term – behind Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid – having also clinched a record sixth Europa League title.

Sevilla Vs Rennes – Key Facts

  • Reigning Europa League holders Sevilla are striving to preserve a 12-game unbeaten home record in European competition, winning ten.
  • Third in France’s Ligue 1 last season, Rennes have managed to win just once in their previous eight European matches (W1 D2 L5), losing each of the last four away.
  • These clubs are meeting for the very first time. Rennes, however, would seal a 3-1 victory away to Sevilla’s Andalusia rivals, Real Betis, in the 2018-19 Europa League.

The fact goals are so few and far between in Sevilla‘s recent games only served to boost the price about both teams scoring, a bet I feel has every chance. The pair arrive in poor form, both winless in four, but have not had the rub of the green at times despite producing some promising underlying xG numbers: 1.7 & 1.4 xGF respectively. Furthermore, both teams have scored in all but one of Rennes‘ nine games in 2020-21.
