Sevilla – Lopetegui’s side not blowing anyone away?

Following the stalemate with struggling Valladolid in their most recent encounter at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium, a match in which the hosts held a lead up until the 87th minute, Sevilla (W7 D2 L4) have now managed successive La Liga home games without winning for the first time since June. This after losing narrowly here to a rejuvenated Real Madrid at the beginning of December.

Manager Julen Lopetegui will have nonetheless been thrilled with the response of his team, overseeing their now trademark 1-0 scoreline on the road in Valencia before Christmas. That their fifth 1-0 victory of the campaign and fourth across their last seven matches (W5 D1 L1) in the competition. Less thrilling, however, is the fact they have mustered no more than one goal in 11 of 13 league games this season.

By the same token, Sevilla have conceded more than once on three occasions so far. Evidently defending is not a problem, but, as we saw recently with the 1-1 draw against Valladolid, banking on the odd goal being enough is a dangerous game. Moreover, their record of having scored one goal or fewer in three of the past four home meetings with Villarreal, winning none (D3 L1), suggests more scoring woe is in the offing.

Villarreal – Yellow Submarine proving unsinkable under Emery?

With former club Arsenal in turmoil towards the bottom of the English Premier League, Unai Emery visits another of his former employers with his reputation arguably enhanced after steering Villarreal (W6 D8 L1) to a club record 19-games unbeaten across all competitions. Sevilla, with whom Emery won the Europa League in all three of his seasons at the helm, stand in the way of marking 20 games without defeat.

The omens are encouraging. In the past four seasons, Villarreal have lost just one of eight encounters against Sevilla. They haven’t lost any of the last four held away from home (W1 D3), bringing a seven year wait for an away victory to an end when earning a 2-1 scoreline at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan in December last year. However, Expected Goals suggests they were a tad fortunte (xG: SEV 2.29 – 1.61 SEV)

As outstanding an achievement as going unbeaten in so long is, with 12 coming in La Liga (W5 D8), it would be foolish not to shed light on the sheer volume of draws. Eight, to be precise, in the league since suffering their only defeat of the campaign at Barcelona (4-0) towards the end of September. The Yellow Submarine have also won only twice on the road thus far (W2 D4 L1).

Sevilla Vs Villarreal Betting Advice

Unbeaten in each of the past four La Liga meetings at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan, having won this fixture 2-1 last season, Villarreal must surely be confident of stretching their club record 19-game unbeaten run in all competitions (13 in La Liga) on Tuesday. Their record on the road (W2 D4 L1) leaves a little to be desired, though, with their only away wins so far coming against Getafe and Osasuna, which both ended 3-1.

Sevilla Vs Villarreal – Key Facts:

  • At home in La Liga this season, Sevilla have failed to hit the back of the net more than once in all but one of six matches (W3 D1 L2, GF7 GA5).
  • Five draws from the last six La Liga games for Villarreal, with four of those producing 1-1 scorelines. They are unbeaten in the league since October (W5 D8).
  • Sevilla have won just one of their previous eight (W1 D5 L2) La Liga meetings with Villarreal, the latter unbeaten on the road in this fixture for four successive seasons (W1 D3).

Sevilla have been inconsistent at home and have actually picked up more points on the road. In fact, Julen Lopetegui’s men have won just half their home games so far (W3 D1 L2), taking one of the last six points against Real Madrid (0-1) and Valladolid (1-1). They’ve scored exactly one goal in 8 of 13 league games. So with four of Villarreal’s last six matches in La Liga ending 1-1, another low-scoring stalemate appeals.
