The first qualifying rounds of the Europa League also get underway this week, and my next preview features Irish club, Shamrock Rovers, entertaining Swedish side, AIK, at their Tallaght Stadium in Dublin in Thursday night’s first leg.
Shamrock Rovers currently sit in fourth place in the Irish Premier Division, but they come into this European encounter having gone three matches without a win which includes defeats to Dundalk in the Leinster Senior Cup, a draw with Cork City in the league and a heavy 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Celtic in a pre-season friendly for the Scottish champions.
Shamrock Rovers’s previous results in the Europa League have left a lot to be desired as they’ve gained just two wins on home turf from their 12 home matches, which were victories over Progres Niederkom and Stjarnan, so tonight’s clash will be another big test for the hosts.
Onto AIK then, and the Swedish club come into this first leg in confident mood as they currently sit top of the Swedish Allsvenskan and still remain unbeaten so far in their domestic campaign, as well as holding an away record in the league of 3-4-0 11/6.
AIK are unbeaten in their last eight away matches in all competitions, and they’ll also be looking to improve their fortunes in the Europa League as they’ve gone four matches without a win on their travels in this competition.
However, their last two defeats to Panathinaikos and Sporting Braga are no disgrace, and previously they’d despatched Bala Town and Europa on the road back in 2016, so they stand a good chance of getting a result in Ireland on Thursday night.
