Shamrock Rovers Preview – Kind draw can see them navigate Finnish test?

The competition which briefly made them a household name – of sorts, anyway – is back as Shamrock Rovers, one of two Republic of Ireland representatives at this stage of qualifying, set about trying to avoid an early exit. Victory on the night would see them join Dundalk, last season’s League of Ireland champions and a side who were recently eliminated from Champions League qualifying, in the second round.

In 2011/12, Shamrock Rovers became the first team from Ireland to reach the group stages of the Europa League when stunning Serbian giants Partizan Belgrade over two legs in a play-off. The Hoops will likely need to spring another significant shock if they’re to repeat the same feat this time around. However, that qualifying has been simplified this season, reduced to one-leg ties, may benefit the underdog.

Since featuring in the group stage, The Hoops haven’t made it beyond the second round of qualifying in six attempts. In 2016, meanwhile, they were dumped out by Finnish opposition, which should serve as a warning ahead of hosting another on Thursday. Last season, though, they outdid themselves, beating both Brann (Norway) and Apollon Limassol (Cyprus) in South Dublin only to lose in extra-time to the latter.

Ilves Preview – Lack of continental experience to hold them back?

Theoretically, Tampereen Ilves should be the weakest link among the three-strong Finnish contingent bidding to reach the second round of qualifying. They are also short on experience at this level: their sole previous appearance in the competition ended almost as soon as it begun, losing home and away to Bulgarian outfit Slavia Sofia in the first round two seasons ago.

A sluggish start to the 2020-21 domestic season in Finland’s Veikkausliiga also counts against them, occupying sixth place after eleven matches (W4 D4 L3). They’ve won only two of their previous nine encounters since opening with back-to-back victories, and none of their last four when away from home (D1 L3).

However, the weekend just gone would see them secure a timely and morale-boosting victory over FC Lahti, a mid-table outfit in 2019-20 whose 3-1 defeat at Ilves’ Tammelan Stadion in Tampere on Saturday could prove vital in terms of raising spirits ahead of the club’s first experience of football in the Republic of Ireland.

Shamrock Rovers Vs Ilves Betting Advice

Playing at home is only one string to Shamrock Rovers‘ bow. The Republic of Ireland side should also ooze confidence right now, as despite a mini slump in form which has seen them recently draw successive league games 0-0, it is they who currently sit atop the League of Ireland after a nine-game (W7 D2) unbeaten start. Victories over Norwegian and Cypriot clubs in Ireland during last season’s qualifying skirmish also bode well.

Shamrock Rovers Vs Ilves – Key Facts

  • Republic of Ireland’s Shamrock Rovers are featuring in the Europa League qualifying round for a sixth-straight season; during that time they won four of eight home ties (W4 L4).
  • Just a second-ever appearance in Europa League qualifying for Finland’s Ilves, who were unceremoniously dumped out in the first round in 2018/19 after losing both legs to Slavia Sofia.
  • Shamrock Rovers sit atop the League of Ireland (W7 D2) whereas Ilves languish in mid-table in the Finnish Veikkausliiga (W4 D4 L3).

A rare stint in Europe for the visitors meanwhile. Ilves arrive from Finland where they’ve made a mixed start to the new season. They sit sixth having won only four of their first eleven matches (W4 D4 L3), winning one of five away fixtures thus far in which they conceded two or more on three occasions. Incidentally, Shamrock have netted three or more in three of their four home matches in Ireland this season.
