Shanghai SIPG Preview – First loss of the season a rare blip?

Just one team successfully navigated the first eight rounds of this season’s Chinese Super League without losing a single game. That team being a star-studded Shanghai SIPG (1st – W6 D2 L1) who, with Oscar pulling the strings from the heart of the midfield and Hulk and Marko Arnautovic bamboozling defenders with their direct approach play, found themselves quickly swatting aside almost all comers initially.

So it will be interesting to see how they respond to a first defeat of the season last time out, when goals late into either half condemned Vitor Pereira’s men to a first Super League loss of 2020 away to Hebei. If last season can serve as a handy gauge, however, we suspect they will fare rather well. On the four instances Shanghai SIPG were beaten during the previous league campaign, on three of these would a victory immediately follow.

Being back at their Yuanshen Sports Centre is also a big boost. Since the start of the 2020 season in China, no team has claimed more points (13 from 15) or scored more goals (14) from home matches than ‘The Red Eagles’, who are chasing a third successive home win following comfortable successes recently over Chongqing Lifan (3-0) and Tianjin Teda (4-1).

Qingdao Huanghai Preview – Fourth defeat on the spin looms large?

Three point hauls have been thin on the ground for Qingdao Huanghai (7th – W1 D4 L4) so far this season, with the club’s maiden spell in China’s top division producing one win – with that coming in their sixth fixture away at bottom side Tianjin Teda – and seven points after nine rounds. On a more positive note, the fact they’ve so far avoided a defeat more often than not does at least showcase a collective not exactly overawed by their new surroundings.

However, alarm bells may well be ring, and loud, following last weekend’s 1-0 loss at home against mid-table Shijiazhuang. That a third league defeat in quick succession, all coming inside two weeks and all played out inside their residence in Qingdao. Perhaps, then, a first away outing in three weeks will do them good – while it has been away from home where most of their points so far (5 compared to 2) were earned.

Trips to Wuhan Zall (2-0), Shijiazhuang (2-2), Chongqing Lifan (0-0) and Tianjin Teda (0-2) brought a return of five points from twelve, losing only to the first of that aforementioned quartet. Not a bad return by any means for a team evidently lacking in Super League experience or much in the way of star quality in their ranks.

Shanghai SIPG Vs Qingdao Huanghai Betting Advice

A second successive Shanghai SIPG loss seems unlikely here, with the current Group B leaders facing a Qingdao Huanghai side second from bottom and coming off the back of three consecutive defeats. The pair would share the points in their first clash of the season on August 6, however that was in Qingdao. Normal order should be restored in Shanghai, where Vitor Pereira’s men boast four wins from five this season.

Shanghai SIPG Vs Qingdao Huanghai – Key Facts

  • 13 consecutive home Super League games without losing (W11 D2) for Shanghai SIPG, whose last such defeat was in June 2019 against that season’s champions Guangzhou Evergrande.
  • Qingdao Huanghai have alternated between scoring none and two goals across all four away matches this season, winning their latest away match-up 2-0 at Tianjin Teda.
  • The pair’s only previous Super League meeting ended in a 1-1 draw, which was played out in Qingdao last month.

Averaging nearly three goals so far for every home encounter. Shanghai SIPG’s last two matches at their Yuanshen Sports Centre seen them net hauls of three and four goals, respectively, versus Chongqing Lifan and Tianjin Teda, teams who sandwich Qingdao in the standings. Former Premier League duo Oscar and Marko Arnautovic were on target in both, and another comfortable home outing beckons.
