Preview: Both these teams have made bright starts to the 2019-20 Premier League season, with neither falling to a defeat after two matches played. That could all change for one of them at Bramall Lane on Saturday, with hosts Sheffield United welcoming Leicester City to their home ground in what has the potential to be an intriguing encounter.

Sheffield United Preview – Blades to turn in another strong display at home?

The Blades have made an assured start to life back in the Premier League. Victory over Crystal Palace (1-0) last weekend complemented their draw at Bournemouth (1-1) first time out and ensured Chris Wilder’s side were quickest out of the blocks as far as the newly-promoted teams are concerned, sitting in sixth position ahead of facing a dangerous Leicester City in their third fixture.

Maintaining this early momentum is key now. That might not be all that much of a problem, with United once again playing in front of what is likely to be another sold out crowd inside Bramall Lane, at a ground where their league form has been nothing short of phenomenal for some time. That deserved win over Palace (Sheffield United created 2.03XG whilst restricting their opponents to just 0.30) was their third league win in a row on home soil when including results from last season.

Furthermore, The Blades have only suffered one league defeat as the home side since early December, with their record at Bramall Lane in that time formidable: W11 D1 L1. As you can clearly see, a lot of those outcomes were winning ones, and it is worth noting that on the last ten occasions Sheffield United were victorious at home it was accompanied by a clean sheet. A Sheffield United WIN to NIL is rated a 19/4 chance by BetVictor.

Sheffield United to score at least one goal seems a probable scenario: on only two occasions – against local rivals Sheff Wed, and Leeds United – did Chris Wilder’s team fail to score in front of their home fans in last season’s Championship. The unlikely hero last week was midfielder John Lundstram, with the Fantasy Premier League favourite an industry-best 18/1 to score anytime with Sportingbet.

Leicester City Preview – Keeping The Foxes at bay could be difficult?

Tipped by many to break through the stranglehold of the top six this season, Leicester City have arguably made a more promising start than their results would suggest. Not that back-to-back draws with Wolves and Chelsea are terrible outcomes, but two points from their opening two matches still has that deceptively modest look about it, with The Foxes occupying 12th place in the standings.

Three points here would certainly alter any skewed perceptions, however. On the basis of how the team has performed in its first two fixtures, victory away to Sheffield United would not count as shock, but it certainly won’t be straightforward either. Particularly as their away form is one area which stills feels it is in need of further improvement under Brendan Rodgers.

Since overseeing two wins from his first three away encounters in charge of The Foxes, Rodgers has since seen his team fail to win its last three away from home – although a significant disclaimer comes in the form of them having played two of those three winless outings away to Man City (1-0) and Chelsea (1-1). That they remained competitive in both, and were perhaps deserving of more from those encounters, is of more encouragement than the actual results.

The one thing which does seem very likely to occur is Leicester scoring. Champions Man City are the only side to have prevented them from doing so in their past eleven away Premier League games, with the latest of those coming at Chelsea last Sunday. The main surprise on that occasion was Wilfred Ndidi being the man who scored it; the Nigerian is 13/1 with PaddyPower to do so again here.

Sheffield United V Leicester City Key Facts:

  • Sheffield United finished with the best home record in last season’s Championship (W15 D4 L4), failing to score on only two occasions.
  • Leicester City produced the seventh-best away record in last season’s Premier League (W7 D4 L8) and have scored in ten of their previous eleven away fixtures.
  • The most recent six league and cup meetings between these two sides resulted in Sheffield United (W0 D2 L4) winning none, with Leicester victorious on their last two visits to Bramall Lane.

Betting Summary

Sheffield United can be more than satisfied with their work so far, claiming four points from a possible six following a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth and a 1-0 victory at home to Crystal Palace. In truth, though, neither of those teams are at the same level as Leicester. Therefore, another huge collective effort is required once again from The Blades, who are seeking a fourth successive league win at home and did produce the strongest home record in last season’s Championship (W15 D4 L4).

Leicester have made a bright start, even if there are only a couple of points to show for it, after successive draws with Wolves (0-0) and Chelsea (1-1). Brendan Rodgers’ side created the better scoring opportunities against the former and looked more likely of finding a late winner in the latter game. So they could be dangerous here.

Two confident teams that are unlikely to sit back and adopt a cautious approach. Sheffield United didn’t give Palace a sniff at home last weekend. In fairness, that possibly had more to do with how average the opposition continue to be in attack. Leicester, by contrast, possess more creative individual and a knack for scoring on their travels, so this will be a much sterner test between two positive sides.
