A 2-0 midweek home win over relegation threatened Burton Albion has thrusted Sheffield United back into play-off contention, and they are at Bramall Lane again on Saturday afternoon when they take on Nottingham Forest in the Championship.
From the end of December through to early February, Chris Wilder’s men hit a lean period of form which saw The Blades pick up just one league win from six matches, which was a 2-1 away win at Norwich City, but defeats to Bolton Wanderers, Aston Villa and Wolves threatened to de-rail Sheffield United’s play-off ambitions.
But four wins from their last seven matches overall have helped lift today’s hosts within striking distance of the play-off pack, and they now sit just one league place and two points adrift of Middlesbrough. With a fairly reasonable looking home record of 11-2-5 29/16 under their belts, there’s plenty of incentive for the home side to continue where they left off here.
Former Middlesbrough manager, Karanka, is starting to make his mark at the City Ground as his Nottingham Forest charges have put together a six match unbeaten run in the Championship, and they’ll be hoping they can get something from their trip up to Sheffield this Saturday.
However, as we saw when in charge of Middlesbrough, Karanka’s side have drawn too many in recent times to really make their mark in their league table standing, and Forest still occupy a bottom half position in the second tier of 16th place.
On the one hand, the defeats have been halted (Forest lost six of their eight matches played from Boxing Day to mid-February), but league wins have been hard to come by too as the Tricky Trees have managed just three wins from their last 16 matches.
A more adventurous Sheffield United outfit should win here.
