Sheffield United – Blades seeking to bounce back at Bramall Lane?

This season has been astonishing. However, there can be little doubt that Sheffield United are missing the same intensity and quality to their play that was in evidence up until the enforced break stunted their momentum. It also hasn’t helped playing all three of their matches since the restart away from Bramall Lane, where they can finally return on Sunday bidding to reach a first FA Cup semi-final since 2013/14.

Sheffield United returning to home comforts isn’t the only boost for Chris Wilder. The Blades boss was missing key players for Wednesday’s 3-0 loss at Old Trafford with Manchester United – falling five points behind that same team in fifth – but can welcome back both John Egan and goalkeeper Dean Henderson. That a third successive defeat upon returning to action following the pandemic.

Suddenly, winning this competition represents as good an opportunity to qualify for Europe next season as the league. The Blades have had it relatively easy up until now, though, facing AFC Fylde, Millwall and Reading in earlier rounds. Sunday’s opposition will be a tougher proposition. Not that United will be unduly daunted having beaten Arsenal 1-0 at Bramall Lane in October before holding their own in a 1-1 draw in North London.

Arsenal Preview – St Mary’s triumph a rarity or catalyst?

Dismissing the chances of the most successful club in the history of the competition sounds rather foolish, but how does a team enduring an inconsistent and tumultuous campaign go about ending it with the FA Cup? Were they to somehow to do, and it would be some achievement from Mikel Arteta after only arriving midway through the season, then it would go a long way to salvaging an otherwise disastrous 2019/20.

The FA Cup is probably the club’s best route into Europe next season as well. Arsenal, who were 2-0 winners at St Mary’s on Thursday against Southampton to put a rotten week behind them, find themselves down in ninth position in the Premier League. Not only are the likes of Man Utd and Wolves, in fifth and sixth respectively, six points better off but the two sides possess a level of consistency severely lacking in North London.

Victory at Southampton would also represent a first away win in the league for more than six months, having failed to win on the road in seven prior attempts (D5 L2). Hardly a ringing endorsement for their chances here, away to a side who inflicted a 1-0 loss on them back in October and who would hold them to a draw in London. Meanwhile, Arsenal needed to overcome Leeds (1-0), Bournemouth (1-2) and Portsmouth (0-2).

Sheffield United Vs Arsenal Betting Preview

It seems I grossly overestimated the chances of Sheffield United earlier in the week at Old Trafford. I am undeterred however, partly because they will be stronger for that chastening experience – psychologically but also in terms of welcoming back key personnel. Furthermore, only five teams have gone to Bramall Lane in the league this season and won, and Arsenal, with three away wins all season who were beaten 1-0 at Bramall Lane, were not one.

Sheffield United Vs Arsenal – Key Facts

  • In the Premier League this season only five teams – of those, Arsenal were not among them – have gone to Bramall Lane and beaten Sheffield United (W7 D3 L5).
  • Just a third away win of the Premier League season for Arsenal in midweek, with The Gunners previously winless on their travels in seven (D5 L2).
  • This will be a third meeting between the sides in 2019/20, with Sheffield United boasting the upper hand having won 1-0 at home and drawn 1-1 away

That this will be Sheffield United’s first match played at Bramall Lane since the restart could also be key, with Man City the last side to win there in eight (W5 D2 L1). The hosts are big enough that we can get them onside Draw No Bet and still be left with a better than even money shot.
