Sheffield United – One final hurrah for Blunt Blades?

Bramall Lane will sample the Premier League one last time on Sunday as Sheffield United (W6 D2 L29) try to give their supporters inside the ground something to cheer about. The Blades are destined to finish bottom of the table, however, despite picking up one more win over the course of a wretched campaign than Fulham and West Brom, the two sides who will join them in the Championship from next season.

It could also be the last time we see Paul Heckingbottom in the dugout. Since replacing Chris Wilder in March, United have only won two of ten league games, losing eight, and scored just three times, at a rate of 0.3 per game. To say they are going down with a whimper would be an understatement then. Although they couldn’t be accused of a lack of effort or desire in some of their more recent displays.

Wednesday’s 1-0 loss at Newcastle United was certainly a case in point. David McGoldrick missed a golden opportunity early on to put them ahead while Aaron Ramsdale was outstanding between the sticks. That was the fourth game in six in which the Blades had restricted their opponents to no more than one goal, having gone to Europa League-chasing Everton and won 1-0 in their previous outing.

Burnley – Clarets relieved to away from Turf Moor?

Following Wednesday’s 3-0 home defeat to Liverpool that made it ten consecutive Premier League games at Turf Moor without a win, Burnley (W10 D9 L18) are on course to finish as the worst of the rest down in 17th. That is unless Sean Dyche’s side can claim a rare win away to bottom side Sheffield United, while also hoping Brighton and Newcastle come unstuck away to Arsenal and Fulham respectively.

The Clarets have now lost six of their last eight league games (W2). The omens ahead of kick-off on Sunday are hardly encouraging, either. Burnley have won only one of their past 18 away league games versus Sheffield United (D5 L12) – a 3-2 win in the Championship back in 2008 – and were beaten in resounding fashion here last season, going down 3-0 after conceding all three goals in the opening 45 minutes.

More pertinent, however, will be the statistic that reads each of their last four league wins have come away from home (vs Crystal Palace, Fulham, Everton and Wolves). Moreover, their record away to bottom-half sides this season reads W3 D3 L2. Much will depend on Nick Pope’s availability, though. Burnley have lost all five league games without their number 1 this season, conceding 3.4 goals per game.

Sheffield United Vs Burnley Betting Advice

I’ll be the first to admit that this isn’t the most exciting of contests with which to focus our attentions on from the Premier League’s final batch of fixtures. Nevertheless, both sets of players will be keen to end the season with a rare win. Between them they have chalked up 16 wins, a figure less than half the teams in the league, while these are among the three worst sides for goals scored (Sheff Utd 19, Burnley 27).

Sheffield United Vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • It is one win from the last seven league meetings (D2 L4) for Sheffield United vs Burnley – though the latter possess a rotten record away to the Blades (W1 D5 L12).
  • Sheffield United have tasted defeat in 13 of 18 Premier League home games this season, with nine of these seeing them fail to trouble the visiting goalkeeper.
  • Burnley‘s last four Premier League victories were away from home, while all but one of their six away wins this season were accompanied by a clean sheet.

Burnley begin as favourites, probably on account of their superior league position but also their strong away form. Sean Dyche’s side boast wins in five of their last nine away matches. Four of those were without conceding. Meanwhile, only Fulham have netted fewer at home this season than Sheffield United. The Blades have lost 13 times at Bramall Lane, with nine of those being ‘to nil’ including all of the previous four.
