English Premier League
Pick: Over 2.5 Goals
Odds: 4/6

Preview: Only Liverpool are on a longer losing streak at the present time than rock-bottom Sheffield United, so it is rather apt the sides should meet at Bramall Lane on Sunday. It took a fortuitous Gini Wijnaldum effort to split them in last season’s corresponding fixture, in a game of few chances.

Sheffield United – Blades now resigned to relegation fate?

Has the last of their resistance finally been broken? Between now and the end of the season, Sheffield United (W3 D2 L20) will not face another side who, like themselves, are currently in the bottom three, after losing the latest of those match-ups 1-0 at Craven Cottage to Fulham last time out. A dire outcome which leaves Chris Wilder’s side stranded at the foot of the Premier League, fourteen points from safety.

The Blades are now as short as 1/66 in the Premier League Relegation Market. Ironically, the only team enduring a worse run than the three consecutive league defeats United are on is champions Liverpool, who are seeking to avoid losing for the fifth league outing in a row. However, this is nevertheless an unfavourable match-up, the South Yorkshire outfit losing all three meetings since their promotion in 2019/20.

There is clearly no love lost between the managers, though. We can therefore expect Chris Wilder to have his players sufficiently fired up. Yet cold hard facts speak for themselves. With 20 defeats from 25 Premier League games (9 of those coming at home) – scoring fewer goals (15) and keeping fewer clean sheets (1) than all other sides – they are on course for one of the poorest campaigns in the modern era.

Liverpool – Ailing Reds must atone for derby debacle?

Just when it seems Liverpool (W11 D7 L7) have reached their lowest ebb, they find new ways of dropping even deeper into the abyss. To lose their first Merseyside derby in 24 meetings – and first at Anfield since 1999 – is about as low and demoralising as it possibly gets, for a side 19 points back from league leaders Man City. More significantly, they are now five points off those coveted Champions League places.

Jurgen Klopp has thirteen league games remaining of this season with which to avoid an impending disaster. Failure to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition would be a catastrophe. On recent evidence, however, after Everton became the fourth straight team to inflict defeat on last season’s runaway champions, it is incredibly difficult imaging them turning it around while also hoping others ease up.

We would need to go back to 1953 for the last occasion the Reds suffered five consecutive league defeats. Equalling that run seems unthinkable bearing in mind they next face rock-bottom Sheffield United, against whom they won all three league meetings since the start of 2019/20. However, all four of their away wins this season came in London, losing all seven away fixtures outside of the capital (D3 L4).

Sheffield United Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

There could be a frosty greeting on the sidelines at Bramall Lane. The respective managers voiced their contrasting views on the potential for five substitutes earlier in the season, which turned into a very public spat. Funnily enough, Chris Wilder and Jurgen Klopp share plenty in common, with both at the helm of struggling sides who have endured rotten luck this term, particularly on the injury front.

Sheffield United Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • On the same weekend Sheffield United lost for the third Premier League game in a row, Liverpool were slumping to their fourth straight league defeat last time out.
  • Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has scored 16 goals in his last 17 away games in all competitions, as many as he had managed across his previous 51 away fixtures.
  • All three encounters between the sides since the start of last season were tightly fought but ultimately won by Liverpool, who edged their fixture at Anfield in October 2-1.

Between them these teams have accrued seven clean sheets in the Premier League this season, six of those for Liverpool who have seen their makeshift defence breached in all of the past seven league games. There are also reports goalkeeper Alisson could be absent. So there is every chance we could be in for a turbulent encounter, between two desperate outfits well aware that only three points will suffice.
