Sheffield United – Blades looking sharper of late?
“We’re alive.” Despite his side sitting 13 points adrift of Premier League safety at the foot of the table, Sheffield United (W2 D2 L17) manager Chris Wilder still believes his team are capable of turning around a dire situation. On recent evidence, after earning two wins from their last four league games, perhaps there is still signs of life about a side that finished a respectable ninth on their return to the top tier last term.

The sorry team on that occasion were West Brom, offering further hope that Sheffield United, with four wins in their past six competitive matches across the league and FA Cup, can continue their mid-season revival at the Baggies expense. For that to happen, though, Wilder’s men will need to better dismal returns of one win and only six goals scored from ten home league games this season (W1 D1 L8).
West Brom – Pereira to the fore once more?
Having spurned the opportunity to claim three valuable points last time out against a direct rival in the battle for survival, West Brom (W2 D6 L13) are immediately presented with another, this time against rock-bottom Sheffield United. The Baggies prevailed 1-0 when these sides met at The Hawthorns in November, with England U-21 international Conor Gallagher opening his Premier League account in a 1-0 triumph.
More recently it has been a Brazilian providing the vast majority of the team’s attacking output. A goal and an assist in Saturday’s frustrating 2-2 draw with 18th-placed Fulham, a game they trailed early doors but led after the break, means that of the seven league goals scored since Sam Allardyce was appointed manager in December, Mateus Pereira has had a direct hand in five with four goals and an assist.
Big Sam will once again be relying on his Brazilian playmaker pulling the strings at Bramall Lane, where their hosts have kept a solitary clean sheet in ten league outings in 2020-21. Moreover, the Baggies have netted at least once in each of their past five away league games (W1 D2 L2), a run which seem them secure unlikely draws at Liverpool and Man City while also scoring three in a 3-2 victory at Wolves.
