Neither Sheffield Wednesday or Preston North End are in good form at the moment so something will have to give as they two go head to head at Hillsborough.

Sheffield Wednesday Preview – Will Wednesday bounce back following a couple of disappointing results?

It’s all about looking ahead to next season for Sheffield Wednesday and boss Gary Monk. Defeats against West Brom and Swansea ended the last bit of hope they could sneak into a top six place whilst there is no danger they will be dragged into the scrap at the bottom considering they are eight points clear with five games to go. Instead, Monk will look for a positive finish to proceedings and begin planning for what lies ahead.

Wednesday had started the resumption pretty strongly with four points from the first two games. Considering their opponents were Nottingham Forest and Bristol City was a solid start. That’s the level of performance and result they have to get back to in the remaining matches.

The inconsistency that has blighted the Owls in the first four games back are indicative of their form throughout the season. Wednesday have won back to back games on just three occasions and with form like that they are never going to be serious challengers for the playoffs. And it’s why they have always been on the periphery.

It’s also now just one win in their last nine home games in the Championship. With games against Huddersfield and Middlesbrough to come before the end of the season, Monk will be targeting a strong finish to their home campaign.

Preston North End Preview – Can Preston end a dismal run a get a first win in eight games?

The restart has not brought much in the way of optimism or positivity for anyone at Preston North End. Alex Neil men went into the break in poor form having lost three straight and that left them outside the top six but still very much part of the conversation. Since returning North End have taken just two points from four matches to give them virtually no chance of finishing in the playoff spots.

The Deepdale club are now in 10th and six points behind sixth place Cardiff. Whilst stranger things have happened, the current form of Preston provides no confidence they can get anywhere close to the points they need.

Neil will be especially disappointed with how Preston have came back. Their only two points have come against clubs battling relegation whilst they have been well beaten by two clubs vying for a top six place. The quality has not been there and they will now likely be competing in the Championship for a sixth straight season.

Scoring goals has been a real issue for Preston of late, too, failing to score more than one goal in any of their last seven.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Preston North End Betting Advice

It’s not going to be a game which whets the appetite of the neutral or even some of the supporters of both clubs. Whilst the visitors have an outside chance of a finish in the top six it’s looking very unlikely. That said, both managers will be desperate for some encouragement heading into the last four games.

Preston did manager a 2-1 win at Deepdale earlier in the campaign but have lost on their last three visits here.

Key Facts – Sheffield Wednesday vs Preston North End Betting Tip

  • Wednesday are set for a lower-half finish following consecutive defeats to West Brom and Swansea
  • Preston’s hopes of a top-six finish appear over having gone seven games without a win
  • Sheffield Wednesday have won their last three home games against Preston

Preston are the lowest away scorers in the league despite being in and around the playoffs all season and have scored just one goal in their last four away matches. Wednesday are certainly not prolific at home either, scoring three goals in their last eight at Hillsborough.

It stands out as being a low-scoring affair and I’m happy to take the under 2.5 goals.
