Domestic football continues on Tuesday night and my next pick features surprise package, Shrewsbury Town, taking on Southend United in League One at the Meadow, with Shrewsbury looking to maintain their position at the top of the English third tier.
The Shrews signalled their early intent to the rest of the division on Saturday when they secured all three points in a 1-0 home win over promotion favourites, Wigan Athletic, and they hold home advantage once more on Tuesday night when Southend United come to town.
Shrewsbury have won five of their six league matches to date, and along with a 100% home record which stands at 3-0-0 5/2 which includes wins over Northampton Town, Rochdale and Wigan, the hosts look a good bet here. Incidentally, they registered a 1-0 home win over tonight’s opponents, Southend United, in their last home match of last season.
Visitors Southend United find themselves in the bottom half of League One following just one league win so far in this new season, which was a surprising opening day win over Blackburn Rovers 2-1 at their Roots Hall ground.
However, since then, The Shrimps have gone five league matches without a win as they’ve stumbled to draws against Plymouth Argyle, Gillingham and Rochdale, as well as suffering defeats to Rotherham United 5-0 and Saturday’s 2-1 loss away at Charlton Athletic.
With just one away win from their last six on the road overall, and four defeats during this recent miserable sequence, Southend will have their work cut out to get anything out of an in-form Shrewsbury outfit here this evening.
