As the Swiss season nears it’s conclusion, both Sion and Thun are in desperate need for points when they meet on Saturday to ensure that they stay in the Super League for another campaign.

Sion Preview – Are Sion capable of continuing their recent good form to go above opponents in table?

There has been an definite improvement for Sion over the last couple of weeks as they have been able to put together a run of two wins and two draws. It’s been a much-needed improvement and comes on the back of 12 games without a win where they lost eight. That has been the way of it for most of the campaign – particularly since a really promising start to proceedings which seen them win five of their first seven games.

Sion have only been able to record three more wins in the 25 games since and that is why they find themselves second bottom in the relegation playoff position.

 

 

Tomorrow’s game against Thun represents a massive 90 minutes as it comes against the team who are directly above them in the table and where Sion aim to be. In addition to playing at home they also have a game in hand over their rivals which could yet prove decisive.

Sion will face FC Zurich following this match before taking on leaders Young Boys and eventually completing the season against Servette. All four are current top six teams so they have a challenging run-in beyond this game.

Thun Preview – Can Thun make it three straight wins to move further clear of relegation trouble?

If their opponents have picked up their form then the same can be said about Thun. They are also unbeaten in their last four games (winning three of them) but their form has been more consistent since football returned. In the games they have played, Thun have won five and drawn two which has pulled them out of immediate danger of relegation. They also know that their destiny is in their own hands and a win here would put them within touching distance of confirming their presence in next season’s Super League.

It’s been at home where Thun have been excellent of late winning all five of their games since resumption. Extending that back before the break and they are unbeaten in their last eight home games.

Whilst that run of form at home is hugely encouraging, Thun’s away form is a lot more concerning. They have won just once in their last nine away games and two of their final three matches are on the road with their only home match against second-placed Basel.

Striker Ridge Munsy has been pivotal in recent weeks scoring four goals in as many matches and six in total since the resumption. He will be Thun’s biggest threat going into this game.

 

Thun travel here not only win the worst away record in the league but also the worst defensive record (both overall and away). It’s their lack of form on the road that is the biggest concern, however, and is why I am taking Sion to be victorious for the third time against Thun and go level on points in the process.
