Slavia Prague Preview – Can last season’s quarter-finalists gain a first leg advantage at home?

It was another league title success for Jindrich Trpisovsky and his players last season – their third straight. Having reached the group stages back in 2018/19, Slavia have been unable to get beyond the qualifiers in either of the last two seasons. Last season it was the Danish champions who accounted for them and this it around Ferencvaros from Hungary proved to be too good for them.

The damage was done in the away leg when losing 2-0 so even a 1-0 victory in the return leg wasn’t enough to see them make it into the playoff stage.

Our betting prediction
Slavia Prague win/Under 2.5 goals
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Tuesday 17 August)

Whilst Champions League football would obviously be the priority for Slavia, if they can recreate their exploits from the last two season’s Europa League then they will be content enough you feel. Slavia have reached the quarter-finals in 2019/20 and 2020/21. Chelsea and Arsenal have knocked them out in respective years but it shows you what this team are capable of.

One player who is experiencing all this for the first time is Ivan Schranz. Signed from Jablonec in the summer, the striker has already scored four goals in the Czech league and will be looking to make an impact in Europe as well.

Legia Warsaw Preview – Will Legia have what it takes to trouble their hosts and keep Europa League hopes alive?

Czeslaw Michniewicz had the perfect first season in charge of Legia as he led the club to their domestic title – their second in a row and their fifth in the last six seasons. There’s no question they have been the dominant force in Polish football over the last decade but they have been unable to translate that into success in the Champions League.

Despite having the opportunity of reaching the group stages after those title successes, Legia have managed to do so on just one occasion and that was back in 2016/17. After defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the third round of qualification for the Champions League last week, they are going to have to wait at least another year to get back.

Legia had seen off Bodo/Glimt and Flora in earlier qualification rounds and despite getting a very credible 1-1 draw in Zagreb they suffered a 1-0 defeat at home and will now have to sell some players to make up the financial shortfall. Josip Juranovic is likely to be one of those with the Croatian international set to sign for Celtic.

One man who will be particularly keen to progress into the next stage of the Europa League is Tomas Pekhart. The Czech striker has played for both Slavia and Sparta Prague in the early part of his career and was Legia’s top scorer last season with 22 goals in the league.

Slavia Prague vs Legia Warsaw Betting Advice

There’s no doubt this is a consolation for both of these teams after the disappointments of last week but it’s the best they’re going to get in terms of European football this season with the losers facing the prospect of playing in the Europa Conference League.

Slavia do have the most impressive form in recent years with those last eight appearances and will feel this home game could be crucial in them advancing to the group stages once again.
