America’s Sofia Kenin is looking very good outsider option for the 2020 Australian Open title. The youngster held her composure really well in the fourth round as she fought past the crowd and Cori Gauff.
She will be taking on Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur for a place in the semi finals at Melbourne Park. This is a very unexpected quarter-final fixture. Jabeur has come through some big matches so far.

Livewire Kenin looking composed and on point
Sofia Kenin was up against her compatriot Cori Guaff in the fourth round of action. With so much hype and attention on Gauff, Kenin was facing a tough environment. Points won by Gauff were met with raucous cheers. Points won by Kenin – crickets. But Kenin equally looks like a future Slam champion. She is a real livewire and has a wonderful touch of aggression in her game.
Kenin is the world number 14 and she has fairly sailed through the tournament. The first set that she dropped was against Gauff and that was on a tie-breaker in the opener. Kenin though found another gear brilliantly and switched tactically to expose the weaknesses in the forehand of Gauff. The 21-year-old is in her first Slam quarter-final. She is favourite to reach the semis.
Can Jabeur rise to the occasion once more?
Kenin and Jabeur are familiar with each other. They have met four times before and it is the American who leads 3-1. One of those was courtesy of retirement by Jabeur in the second set of their meeting in Mallorca last year. Kenin had raced through the opening set. This has been some tournament from Jabeur, who is currently ranked 78th in the world. The 25-year-old is in her first Slam quarter-final as well.

She had only been past the round of 32 in a Slam once before and that was back at Wimbledon 2017. She has come through some tricky challenges at Melbourne Park this year. Jabeur opened with a win over 12th seed Johanna Konta, knocked out the mobile Caroline Garcia and then battled past Caroline Wozniacki, in what was the former champion’s final match of her career. Then Jabeur beat Qiang Wang in straight sets in the fourth round, the player who had dumped out Serena Williams in the previous round.
