First Leg: Torino 5-0 Soligorsk (Goals: Andrea Belotti (x2), Armando Izzo, Lorenzo De Silvestri and Kevin Bonafazi)

Preview: This match-up had an ominous look to it from the outset, and that was effectively came to fruition in Italy last week as Torino condemned Soligorsk to a comprehensive 5-0 defeat. There is almost certainly no coming back from that for the team from Belarus, so can the underdogs at least make a better fist of it back inside their Stroitel Stadium?

Soligorsk Preview – Foolish to dismiss a strong record at home?

Underdogs as soon as the draw was announced, this small club from Belarus were handed what could only be described as a brutal dose of reality in Italy, where they were simply outclassed by a better team from a more established league. The 5-0 scoreline has essentially killed off the competitive nature of this tie, but there is still that cliched matter of pride at stake when Soligorsk take to the field in front of their home support.

Some decent numbers at home, albeit in the Belarusian Premier League against teams nowhere near the standard of Torino, would suggest an improved showing from Soligorsk is the bare minimum that we can come to expect. The Miners, as they are affectionately known back home, have only tasted defeat once on their own patch during the current league campaign (W7 D1 L1, GF21 GA7) and are enjoying a six match unbeaten in said matches (W5 D1). That run includes the perfect warm up as well, thrashing Neman 6-0 on Monday.

The team also deserve some recognition for their efforts in the earlier qualifying rounds. A pair of 2-0 aggregate victories earned against Hibernians of Gibraltar and Esbjerg of Denmark were solid, if not entirely spectacular, but were achieved thanks in no small part to winning displays in Belarus, beating Hibernians 1-0 and Esbjerg 2-0.

In fact, Soligorsk are currently unbeaten at home in Europe since a 1-0 reverse to Austrian side Wolfsberger back in 2015. Since then there have been draws with Domzale (1-1), FK Suduva (0-0) and Lech Poznan (1-1). All five produced low-scoring encounters, which would enhance the prospects of Under 2.5 Goals landing here at odds of 11/8 with BetVictor.

Torino Preview – Goal hungry Italians to show no mercy?

The seventh best team in Italy last season appear to be making up for lost time, with their appearance in Europe this season marking the first occasion they have competed in a UEFA competition since the 2014-15 campaign, when they made it as far as the last-sixteen before exiting to Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.

This season, meanwhile, seen them begin their adventure in the second round, where they met and subsequently thrashed Hungarian side Debrecen 7-1 on aggregate. That was followed by another emphatic victory, this time a 5-0 scoreline inflicted on Soligorsk from Belarus as Torino continue to show little mercy in these early qualifying rounds.

The star thus far has been striker Andrea Belotti, the talented 25-year-old who was linked to some of the biggest clubs on the continent once upon a time. The Italian goal-getter has located the back of the net in all three games so far in Europe this season, and would appear a very good bet at odds of 49/50 with Unibet to maintain that trend here.

That being said, “The Bulls” weren’t the most prolific of travellers in Serie A in 2018/19, barely averaging a goal per game and failing to score a third of the time. There is a legitimate argument that the quality of opponents faced was of far greater substance than that which awaits them in Belarus on Thursday, but with the tie effectively won is there the possibility of Torino easing off ever so slightly?

Soligorsk V Torino Key Facts:

  • Soligorsk are unbeaten in five home European games (W2 D3) and have lost none of their last six at home in the league (W5 D1).
  • Torino have now scored 12 times in just three European matches this season.
  • Italian striker Andrea Belotti has a 100% strike rate in the competition so far, netting twice in the reverse leg.

Betting Summary

The Belarusian side had no answer to the onslaught of attacking football that came their way in Italy last week. Back at home, where they have restricted all of their recent foreign visitors to very little (they’re unbeaten in five home European games, with all five producing fewer than three match goals), an opportunity to restore some pride certainly presents itself.

Torino have plundered goals in every European game so far, hitting Debrecen for 3 and 4 goals in the previous round before going even bigger at home to Soligorsk last time out. The Italians weren’t the most clinical of away sides in last season’s Serie A, notching 20 times in 19 away fixtures, though there is the likelihood of their superior quality shining through once more.

Is it too speculative to presume Torino may ease off now that the tie is essentially won? Either way, the Italians are unlikely to have it all their own way in Belarus, where the hosts boast a decent record both domestically and on the continent, even if a lot of those results were earned against modest opposition. I will take a chance on Soligorsk maintaining that promising home form by keeping matters more competitive second time around; at +1.25 on the Asian Handicap, we net a small win or better provided the hosts avoid losing by at least two clear goals.
