The second weekend of the Premier League rolls around on Saturday and our next preview features a clash between Southampton and Liverpool as the betting tips continue at St Mary’s Stadium.
Southampton Prediction – Can Southampton improve?
Manager, Ralph Hasenhuttl will be demanding more from his Southampton team when they prepare for the visit of Liverpool to St Mary’s Stadium in their opening home match of this new Premier League season on Saturday afternoon.
Southampton were handed a heavy 3-0 defeat away at Burnley in last weekend’s opening match of the top flight season, and although The Saints had enjoyed a successful pre-season, they were ultimately found wanting in last week’s loss at Turf Moor.
The south coast side had won 4 of their 5 warm-up matches prior to the start of this new season which included wins against Preston North End, Guangzhou R&F, Feyenoord and Cologne, but this counts for little if they struggle this season in the Premier League.
Manager, Hasenhuttl, had successfully steered Southampton to safety after relegation seemed a distinct possibility under the previous Mark Hughes regime, but having confirmed their top flight safety, it seemed the players then switched off.
Southampton ended last season without a win from their final 6 matches overall in the Premier League.
Liverpool Prediction – Can Liverpool win three on trot?
Following their opening day win over Norwich City 4-1 at Anfield as they put The Canaries to the sword, Liverpool then beat Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup on penalties after the scores remained level at 2-2 after the 90 minutes.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will therefore be in confident mood as they make their way down to the south coast for this Saturday’s clash against Southampton, whom they’ve signed a number of players from over the past few seasons.
It’s become something of a joke as Southampton have been tagged as the Liverpool ‘B’ team, but the gulf in quality between these two teams is vastly different to those of first-team and reserves at an individual football club.
Liverpool came mightily close to winning the Premier League title last season, and they’ve now won their last 10 league matches on the trot which is no mean feat in what is considered to be the best and strongest domestic league in world football.
The Reds have also won their last 4 away matches on the trot in the top flight with wins at Fulham, Southampton (3-1), Cardiff City and Newcastle United, and they look a very strong unit again this season even though they’ve made no major signings during the summer months.

Southampton will be wanting to give a good account of themselves in this first home match of the season but the gulf between them and Liverpool should become very evident as the match wears on.
