Southampton Preview

Ralph Hassenhuttl was appointed at the backend of last year with a simple mandate of keeping Southampton in the Premier League. Now, with nine games left, that’s still very much the case as the Saints are just two points off the bottom three following a pretty dire run of form. It’s just one win in six matches and had they not defeated Fulham 2-0 at home a fortnight ago, the situation could have been even worse. Southampton fans may point to some of their performances which might have been deserving of a better return, most notably the 3-2 defeat at Old Trafford last week where they conceded a very late goal and left with nothing. We all know that at this stage of the season regardless of league position, it’s all about getting the points on the board and it remains to be seen just how important that late goal proves to be come the end of the campaign. Hassenhuttl and his players cannot linger on that, however, and have to concentrate on what’s ahead which is another game against a top four club. Ordinarily, points gained against these teams are a bonus but with the games running out they simply have to target everyone and try to get something. Four of Southampton’s last nine matches are against top 10 teams, too.

Key-Facts – Southampton v Tottenham

  • Southampton and Tottenham have both been in poor form of late and need the three points on offer
  • The Saints have scored in every home game under this manager and Spurs are the highest away scorers in the league.
  • 10 of the last 15 meetings between these two have went over a total of 2.5 goals

Tottenham Preview

Tottenham may well have qualified for the quarter finals of the Champions League this week having completed the job against Borussia Dortmund, winning the tie 4-0, but they are in danger of making what was seemingly a comfortable top four finish much more difficult than anyone would have anticipated. Maurico Pochettino’s men are now just three points clear of Manchester United in fourth and more importantly, four ahead of Arsenal in fifth spot. With Chelsea a further point behind it’s becoming a very packed section of the table and Spurs need to find some wins quickly. It may well have been even worse had Hugo Lloris not saved a last-minute penalty in the North London derby last Saturday and it’s likely to come down to small margins. Pochettino will be hoping that the win away in Dortmund will galvanise his team and get them back to winning ways in the league. It’s now three games without a win, losing two of those, making it their worst run in the league for well over a year. With games against both Liverpool and Manchester City to come in the six weeks, Saturday’s game begins to come one of the games they really need three points from.

Southampton v Tottenham Betting Advice

This, of course, is a return to a former club for Pochettino who had just over a season in charge before making the move to Spurs. His stock has continued to rise extremely high since that time and he brings his current team back as one of the best in the Premier League. With that comes pressure, however, and there has definitely been some signs of that affecting the players in recent weeks. The same can be said for Southampton, but theirs is a different pressure as they battle for Premier League survival and also try and respond after a stuttering spell.

Although Southampton have been towards the bottom end of the table all season, they do know their way to goal and their goals per game average is around mid-table at 2.79. They have also scored in every single home game since Hassenhuttl took over so will be confident of troubling Spurs at the very least. Tottenham drew a blank in their last away game in the league but that’s the first time they have failed to score on the road in a Premier League game this season and they remain the highest away scorers in the league. All that considered, over 2.5 goals appeals and 10 of the last 15 meetings between these two have went over that total.
