Preview: A South Coast derby with a twist, with both teams in urgent need of some points after some alarming dips in form. Southampton – Leaky Saints offering up entertainment again?

After four consecutive away games, Southampton (W9 D6 L12) finally return to St Mary’s where they will attempt to secure a first win on their own patch since a 1-0 victory against Liverpool on 4 January. Since beating the reigning English champions, the Saints have accrued one point in four home league outings (D1 L3), with that, surprisingly, coming against a Chelsea side enjoying life under a new manager.

This team will also be looking for a rare taste of victory. Last Saturday’s 2-0 scoreline at Bramall Lane against bottom club Sheffield United marked a first win since the aforementioned Liverpool triumph, losing eight of nine previous fixtures, before they were swiftly brought back to reality at Etihad Stadium on Wednesday. A 5-2 defeat meaning they have now lost nine of their last eleven Premier League matches.

Only West Brom have conceded more this season than Southampton (49), whose sole shutout in their previous eleven top-flight matches came at Bramall Lane last week. For context, upcoming opponents Brighton – whom they’ve not beaten, nor managed a clean sheet against, here at St Mary’s in three attempts (D3) since the latter’s promotion to the Premier League in 2017/18 – have allowed 14 fewer goals.

Brighton – Seagulls seeking more away joy?

After four seasons at this level, are Brighton (W5 D11 L11) on course for their first ever relegation from the Premier League? Last week’s 2-1 defeat at home to Leicester was their third on the spin – the first time that has happened since November 2019 – and means only their superior goal difference over Fulham, who are on an upward curve in 18th, is keeping them from dropping into the drop zone.

Adam Lallana’s first goal since arriving in the summer from Liverpool provided a crumb of comfort for manager Graham Potter. However, the sight of his team surrendering another lead will have been harder to process. Sunday’s opponents Southampton are the only side to drop more points from winning points this term than Brighton (17), who have at least fared better in this aspect of their game on the road of late.

Brighton provided the game’s opening goal in three of the last four away league matches (W2 D1 L1), helping them to 1-0 wins over Leeds and Liverpool and a 1-1 draw with Burnley. The exception, therefore, was the recent 1-0 loss at West Brom. A harsh scoreline considering two penalties rattled the woodwork, a legitimate goal was bizarrely ruled out, and numerous gilt-edged chances went begging.

Southampton Vs Brighton Betting Advice

Since Brighton were promoted to the Premier League for the 2017/18 term, this fixture has followed a familiar pattern. Southampton always win at The Amex while the spoils are shared at St Mary’s, where all three contests resulted in scoring draws. The Saints have kept one clean sheet in their past eleven top-flight matches, whereas the Seagulls conceded in four of the last five, so a similar outcome cannot be ruled out.

Southampton Vs Brighton – Key Facts:

  • All three Premier League meetings at St Mary’s between these sides has produced a scoring draw (1-1 x2, 2-2), with the 2019/20 renewal ending 1-1.
  • Southampton have one win from their previous eleven Premier League games (W1 D1 L9) and are currently on a four-match winless run (D1 L3) in home fixtures.
  • Brighton are without a win in their past five Premier League matches (D2 L3), losing the last three successively, but lost one of the last four away (W2 D1 L1).

Danny Ings, if passed fit, is another whom thrives in this fixture. The striker has scored in both encounters at St Mary’s as a Southampton player. Two of the three meetings here saw a penalty awarded, and subsequently scored, with both teams converting from the spot in September 2018. Southampton, meanwhile, have been awarded a penalty in back-to-back league games with James Ward-Prowse coolly converting on both occasions.
