Preview: Some good news for a Brighton side winless in their past nine Premier League games is that they are unbeaten across all four visits to St Mary’s since their promotion to the top-flight in 2017. Can Southampton finally break their duck against the Seagulls?

Southampton – St Mary’s faithful can inspire Ralph’s Saints?

Ralph Hasenhuttl implored his Southampton team to hit the “reset button” in the wake of last Saturday’s 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield. That result on Merseyside made it back to back league defeats for only the second time all season, having previously become the first visiting team to lose at Carrow Road to Norwich City in 2021-22. But the Saints are a different beast when playing in front of a St Mary’s crowd.

The Saints return home to a venue where they have tasted defeat on one occasion all season (W2 D4 L1). That was against Wolves in late September. Four subsequent home outings have yielded two wins and eight points, alternating between 1-0 wins over Leeds and Aston Villa with 2-2 draws against Burnley and Leicester. The latter here at St Mary’s on Thursday, a game they took the lead in on two occasions.

An inability to protect what they have, particularly at home, isn’t something new to them. Southampton have given themselves a lead in five of seven Premier League home games this term but held on to record a win only twice, while that is now three said fixtures in four in which they led at half-time. However, the Saints haven’t opened the scoring at home to Brighton in three of the past four seasons (D3 L1).

Brighton – Relationship between fans and manager breaking down?

Jeers rung around Amex Stadium last weekend as supporters displayed their displeasure to a 0-0 draw at home to struggling Leeds United that extended Brighton’s winless league run to eight matches. The irony was not lost on many, including their own manager, as a team dominant throughout the 90 minutes and on course to surpass their previous best top-flight finish of 15th, were roundly booed off the pitch.

Brighton have since made it nine Premier League games without a win following Wednesday’s 1-1 scoreline at Upton Park against a West Ham side with Champions League aspirations. It is a far cry from their early season form, when winning four of their first five league encounters. Although many would argue that this was always unsustainable about a team that scraped home in 16th last season.

It is worth remembering, however, that the Seagulls have only been beaten on two occasions – by Aston Villa and defending champions Man City – during this winless sequence. Moreover, with three defeats all season long, the likes of Arsenal, Leicester, Man Utd and West Ham all have more losses on the board than the side of Graham Potter. A manager deserving of more respect than he is presently being shown.

Southampton Vs Brighton Betting Advice

Something may have to give at St Mary’s. As while Southampton are in terrific form playing in front of their fans, with Wednesday’s 2-2 draw here against Leicester City making it two wins and as many draws in their past four home games, this is a fixture in which winning has so far eluded them. Brighton are yet to lose in four trips to the venue since gaining promotion to the Premier League in 2017.

Southampton Vs Brighton – Key Facts:

  • This will be the fifth Premier League meeting staged at St Mary’s between the teams. Brighton are yet to lose any of these encounters (W1 D3), winning 2-1 last season.
  • All four Premier League meetings at St Mary’s produced Both Teams to Score. Brighton scored first in three but failed to record a win in the first two of these instances.
  • Southampton come into the game unbeaten in four Premier League home games (W2 D2). Brighton are winless in nine (D7 L2) but lost one of seven away (W2 D4).

Three of their four prior meetings at this ground ended in a draw, all of which saw both teams find the back of the net, and that outcome cannot be discounted on Saturday. No team has played out more home draws this season than the four of Southampton, three of them scoring draws. Meanwhile Burnley are the only side to have drawn more often away from home than Brighton (also four, three of them score draws).
