Southampton – Saints sweating on Ings fitness?

Danny Ings has missed the last three games with the thigh injury he sustained in the 2-0 win at bottom side Sheffield United last month, but could return to face his former club on Sunday. It was also his goal, five minutes in, which settled the reverse fixture at his former stomping ground Turf Moor in September, bringing a seven-match winless sequence against Burnley to an end for Southampton (W9 D6 L14).

Now, the Saints can register a league double over the Clarets for the first time since 1970-71. Bookmakers have them down as favourites to win at St Mary’s this weekend, in spite of the fact Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side have only managed to win one of their previous twelve top-flight fixtures (D1 L10) since a surprise 1-0 win here against defending Premier League champions Liverpool on 4 January.

The winning goal that day was also scored by Danny Ings, so it is little wonder his name continues to be linked with a move away from the South Coast outfit. Capped three times for England’s senior team, Ings may well feel his goalscoring expertise is best utilised elsewhere, rather than in a team whose seven points from a possible 39 in 2021 ranks as the lowest return in England’s top division.

Burnley – Thriving on their travels?

An impressive 3-1 win away to Everton, before some of the players disappeared for international duty, meant Burnley (W8 D9 L12) will have enjoyed the last fortnight of inaction. More importantly, though, they opened up a healthy amount of space on the Premier League relegation zone, now seven points clear of 18th-placed Fulham and only five points shy of the tally of Europa League quarter-finalists Arsenal in tenth.

Next up for Sean Dyche and his team is a visit to St Mary’s, a venue which has served them well in recent seasons. Burnley are currently unbeaten across their last three away meetings with Southampton in the Premier League, keeping successive clean sheets prior to last season’s 2-1 win that came courtesy of strikes from Ashley Westwood and Matej Vydra. Despite this, we can get generous odds on the away side.

Last time out it was England U-21 winger Dwight McNeill who stole show, netting a pearler from outside the area after Chris Wood had opened the scoring with his sixth league goal of 2020/21. Those goals took their tally across their last three away matches to five goals (W2 L1), having recently gone to Crystal Palace and won 3-0. The same number as was scored in their first eleven away league games (W2 D3 L6).

Southampton Vs Burnley Betting Advice

With eight goals coming in their last four matches, albeit one was a comfortable 3-0 win over Championship outfit Bournemouth in the FA Cup, there has been signs of life from Southampton of late to suggest an upturn in results could be around the corner. The imminent return of top scorer Danny Ings would naturally boost those claims, with the former Burnley striker netting the Saints only goal in this fixture last season.

Southampton Vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • The last time Southampton registered a Premier League victory here at St Mary’s against Burnley was in 2016, during the Claude Puel reign.
  • Burnley have since claimed seven points from their past three visits to the Saints, earning a 2-1 win in last season’s corresponding fixture.
  • Southampton have failed to win any of their five Premier League home games since beating defending champions Liverpool. Conversely, Burnley boast two wins in their last three away league outings.

Burnley prevailed 2-1 on their last visit to St Mary’s and are three games without defeat here (W2 D1). Both teams have improved in front of goal recently – Saints netting two or more in three of the last four games and Burnley scoring in three successive matches. However, I still envisage this being a cagey affair with five of the last eight top-flight contests involving Burnley ending in a draw.
