Preview: With the fallout from the Merseyside derby still fresh, Everton must dust themselves off ahead of Sunday’s venture to St Mary’s for a tricky looking match-up with an in form Southampton. Last season’s corresponding league meeting finished 2-1 in favour of the visitors.

Southampton Preview – Ings becoming Saintly figure on South Coast?

Last week’s drama wasn’t confined to Merseyside. Southampton more than played their part on what was another crazy round in the English top-flight, coming from 2-0 and 3-2 down away at Chelsea to draw 3-3 at Stamford Bridge. It was nothing more than they deserved based on the chances created by both sides (xG: CHE 1.84 – 1.81 SOU) but the manner of the result meant it was they who came away feeling the happier.

Two of their goals came from familiar sources, with Danny Ings and then Che Adams bringing their respective tallies for the season to four and one. However, only the brave would have taken a punt on centre-halve Jannik Vestergaard popping up with only his second goal for the club – the other coming against Man Utd – to salvage a point in the 92nd minute. The Dane is a man for the big occasion it seems.

The Saints have found some form after a rocky start, following up back-to-back defeats to Crystal Palace (1-0) and Tottenham (2-5) in their opening two fixtures by taking seven of the next nine available points. A useful point at Chelsea complementing to nil wins over Burnley and West Brom. Danny Ings, with four goals, has once again led from the front and has scored in four of his five appearances against Everton for the South Coast outfit.

Everton Preview – Preparations marred by Merseyside derby fallout?

It has been a turbulent week during, in an otherwise outstanding season, for Carlo Ancelotti and Everton. Then came the Merseyside derby. The Toffees would claim a creditable 2-2 draw against defending champions Liverpool, who twice went in front, but came away depicted as the villains from an enthralling contest that was overshadowed by Jordan Pickford’s incompetence and Richarlison’s recklessness.

It remains a mystery how Pickford escaped punishment – either during last week’s match or retrospectively – for an ugly challenge on Virgil van Dijk, meaning he is set to start in goal on Sunday. Richarlison wasn’t as fortunate, though, and is subsequently serving a three-match suspension. Meanwhile Seamus Coleman and James Rodriguez both picked up knocks that will also see them sit out the trip to St Mary’s.

The loss of two forwards who have been hugely influential in the team’s early success, with Everton winning their first seven games in all competitions prior to last week, is clearly significant. Ancelotti must find a solution in the short-term. They were fortunate not to lose to Liverpool, who created twice as much xG, while their record away to Southampton – five defeats in last seven league visits – is very poor.

Southampton Vs Everton Betting Advice

Squad depth was always likely to prove the downfall of Everton at some stage or another, and the list of absentees has mounted for Carlo Ancelotti. Full-back Seamus Coleman is out injured along with James Rodriguez, who has created more chances this season than all bar one player. Richarlison, meanwhile, is suspended. Southampton, who have won five of the past seven Premier League meetings at St Mary’s, will be smelling blood.

Southampton Vs Everton – Key Facts:

  • A 5-2 reverse in Gameweek 2 against an in-form Tottenham remains the only home defeat in the Premier League for Southampton in the last five said games (W3 D1 L1).
  • It has been an excellent start to the new campaign from Everton. The Toffees are still to lose after eight competitive matches in 2020-21 (W7 D1).
  • A 2-1 win last season represented one of only two wins for Everton in their past seven away Premier League meetings with Southampton (W5).

Everton remain unbeaten in 2020-21 across all competitions so far, a record that will be scrutinised on the South Coast. Southampton have found some form, unbeaten in three (W2 D1), and will be buoyed by their latest effort. I don’t see the hosts losing – they’ve lost once here in the league in five (W3 D1 L1), with three of the last four seeing both teams score. There were also goals at both ends in Everton’s last four league games.
