Southampton – Saints finishing strong at St Mary’s?

It is well-documented how Southampton (W11 D7 L17) were perched atop the Premier League earlier in the season. Just like how their season unravelling at an alarming rate has been a hot topic for some time now. But there are signs that a once highly promising campaign could yet end with some sort of flourish, particularly as they possess the fixtures to do so beginning with a clash with already relegated Fulham.

The Saints are playing especially well here at St Mary’s. Tuesday’s 3-1 victory against Crystal Palace made it seven points from the last nine on offer on home soil, to go with a come-from-behind win over Burnley and creditable 1-1 draw when down to ten men for the majority of the contest with Champions League-chasing Leicester. For context, they had only accrued five points from their previous eight home games.

Danny Ings returned from a minor hamstring injury in midweek to net twice, taking his league tally for the season to 12. He became only the second ever player to reach 20 top-flight home goals for the club, seven of which have come this season. However, the goal Fraser Forster conceded means their wait for a first home clean sheet since a 1-0 triumph over then-champions Liverpool on 4 January goes on.

Fulham – Cottagers going down with a whimper?

Any prospect of the Premier League relegation battle dragging out a little while longer was extinguished last weekend, as Fulham (W5 D12 L18) became the third and final team to be consigned to demotion back to the Championship. The club were only promoted last season but spent much of this one languishing in the bottom three, before their fate was finally sealed with a 2-0 home defeat to Burnley.

That result made it no win in their last seven league games, losing six times in this spell. Their last win was at least memorable – a 1-0 scoreline at Anfield against last year’s Premier League winners Liverpool. Fulham undoubtedly had their moments. Victories away to Everton and Leicester chief among them, while an eight-match unbeaten away run set a new club record in the English top-flight.

However, it is now two defeats in three away from home. Sandwiching a fortuitous 1-1 draw at beleaguered Arsenal with 3-1 and 2-0 reverses against Aston Villa and Chelsea, respectively. Scott Parker’s side now face back-to-back away games, with a trip to Old Trafford to follow, but any appeal about one last away scalp is dented by a paltry return of three goals in their past six away matches (W1 D3 L2).

Southampton Vs Fulham Betting Advice

On Tuesday, Southampton turned on the afterburners as they stormed back from conceding early to Crystal Palace to earn a 3-1 win. Stretching their unbeaten run here at St Mary’s to three (W2 D1). For Fulham it is the exact opposite, having lost two of their past three away encounters (D1 L2) and six of the last seven in all. The Cottagers are going down with a whimper it seems.

Southampton Vs Fulham – Key Facts:

  • These teams contested a 0-0 draw at Craven Cottage in their first league meeting of the season. Just the second occasion in the past seven competitive meetings Southampton failed to beat Fulham.
  • Southampton have won two of the past three Premier League home games, whereas Fulham have lost two of their last three away from home.
  • Despite a stop-start campaign due to various injuries, Southampton striker Danny Ings has 12 goals for the season after netting a brace in his last appearance at St Mary’s.

The home side are a fair price to continue their resurgent home form. Danny Ings being back and scoring is also a huge boost for Ralph Hasenhuttl, with the striker keen to add to his 12 Premier League goals in 2020/21 as he targets a spot in the England squad for the forthcoming European Championship. Ings has seven goals at St Mary’s this season. Moreover, he was absent when these sides played out a forgettable goalless draw in December.
