Southampton – Saints running on empty amid festive scheduling?

Successive games against two of the current top four, where this club still harbour faint hopes of finishing at the end of the season, await Ralph Hasenhuttl and his below par Southampton (W7 D5 L4) side. The Austrian oversaw their recent goalless draw with West Ham from the comfort of his home in a result which extended the Saints winless run to four matches – last enduring a longer wait for a win in November 2019.

Despite welcoming Danny Ings back from injury for the congested festive period, goals have well and truly dried up and have contributed to them falling from one-time league leaders to ninth place. Having netted in all but one of their opening thirteen league fixtures, Southampton have since gone three without a goal. That includes both recent encounters here at St Mary’s with Man City (0-1) and West Ham.

However, only four teams boast a stronger record on home soil (W4 D1 L3) this season than Hasenhuttl’s high-octane outfit, who have recently lacked for sharpness. It would also be a fair criticism to say their record at St Mary’s has been poor so far when entertaining the league’s elite. Both Manchester clubs, as well as Tottenham, departed with maximum points with last month’s 1-0 loss to Man City all rather feeble.

Liverpool – Title defence will hinge on away improvements?

As has become the norm, Liverpool (W9 D6 L1) continue to be irresistible at the fortress that is Anfield. It is therefore quite the saving grace for those teams with ambitions of dethroning the latest Premier League champions that Jurgen Klopp seemingly has no answer to his team’s away travails this season. The German overseeing fewer away wins than the likes of Mikel Arteta at Arsenal and Roy Hodgson at Palace.

In fact Liverpool have only managed to win in the capital when not playing at Anfield, with their only victories coming at Stamford Bridge, in a 2-0 success against Chelsea, and Selhurst Park, where they recently put Crystal Palace to the sword in a stunning 7-0 victory. Their problems ranging from an inability to retain leads to a lack of goals. They have netted no more than one in four of the last five away games (W1 D4).

The latest case in point being Wednesday, when a glut of gilt-edged chances were spurned as they were held to a frustrating goalless draw in Newcastle. It means they have drawn their last two matches, after dropping points at home for the first time all season against lowly West Brom. Meanwhile, we must hark back three seasons ago, to May 2018, for the last time The Reds went three Premier League games without a win.

Southampton Vs Liverpool Betting Advice

Perhaps the hectic festive schedule contributed to some weary legs. Either way, neither Southampton nor Liverpool enter the New Year in positive form. In fact, both come into this meeting down by the South Coast on the back of goalless draws. The Saints extending their winless run to four matches, after being held here by West Ham, while Liverpool drew for the second game running last time out, this time away at Newcastle.

Southampton Vs Liverpool – Key Facts:

  • With four wins from eight league games here at St Mary’s, Southampton have managed twice as many wins at home as Liverpool have on their travels (2).
  • Only two teams have found the net more times away from home this season than Liverpool (16), scoring in all seven away fixtures prior to drawing 0-0 in Newcastle.
  • Each of the last four Premier League meetings between the sides has produced a minimum of three goals, with Liverpool victorious on each occasion.

Despite the lack of goals from both teams lately, this fixture has generally thrown up plenty of final third action with each of the last four league meetings across the past two seasons going Over 2.5 Goals. Crucially, Liverpool won all four. But whereas they did so whilst restricting the Saints to no goals at Anfield, here at St Mary’s the visitors have had their defence breached on both recent visits.
