Preview: Ralp Hasenhuttl has masterminded a seven match unbeaten run as Southampton manager, with his well-drilled side winning each of their past three home league games without conceding. Something surely must give, then, with Manchester United seeking their eighth successive away league win when they visit St Mary’s on Sunday.

Southampton Preview – Saints a team transformed on South Coast?

Only league leaders Tottenham, with eight, are on a longer unbeaten run at the present time than Southampton (W5 D2 L2), who are now seven Premier League games without defeat following a 1-1 draw at Molineux against Wolves. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl described it as one of his team’s most intense performances, and for good reason, with goalkeeper Alex McCarthy making a string of saves to preserve the streak.

Southampton are up into fifth as a result of their outstanding start to the campaign, last losing in the league in September, when shipping five goals in that heavy defeat to Tottenham at St Mary’s. Since then, though, they have been a team reborn, registering 17 of 21 points (W5 D2) whilst averaging over two goals a game (2.1). Arguably the biggest upturn, however, has come in defence, keeping four clean sheets in seven.

Three of those shutouts have come at home, where they are bidding to record four successive victories in the Premier League for the first time since May 2016. The previous three all ended 2-0 in favour of Hasenhuttl’s men, who have gone from possessing the second-worst home record at the end of the 2019/20 league season (W6 D3 L10) to it being the second best in the top-flight the following year (W3 L1).

Manchester United Preview – Can Ole’s men notch eighth-straight away win?

The Red Devils banished their hoodoo at Old Trafford last time out, although it was a lot tighter and more nervy than many of us anticipated, as Manchester United (W4 D1 L3) scraped a 1-0 win over a spirited but limited West Brom. Bruno Fernandes once again the match winner for his side with his second-half penalty, converted at the second attempt, enough to hand them a first home win of the season at the fourth attempt.

Things have been much smoother on the road meanwhile. Along with Aston Villa and Tottenham, United boast a flawless record away from home this season. This in spite of conceding the game’s opening goal in all three said matches, coming from behind to prevail at Brighton (2-3), Newcastle (1-4) and Everton (1-3). Ole Gunnar Solksjaer’s side producing probably their most assured display of the campaign in the latter.

United, it seems, have picked up from where they left off during Project Restart, having now won each of their last seven Premier League away games. For the record, they have never managed eight before in England’s top tier. So there is history to be made, potentially, should these standards by maintained at St Mary’s on Sunday – a venue they are nine games unbeaten at, winning five, since a 1-0 loss in August 2003.

Southampton vs Manchester United Betting Advice

The home side, who came into the weekend in fifth, are four points better off than their opponents having won their last three league games here, at St Mary’s, by the same 2-0 scoreline. Not only are they in superb form then – only table-toppers Tottenham are enjoying a longer unbeaten run right now than their seven (W5 D2) – but they are being efficient with it, going 278 minutes without conceding a goal at home.

Southampton vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • Seven Premier League games unbeaten now for Southampton (W5 D2) since a 5-2 home defeat to Tottenham in September, winning all three subsequent home matches to nil.
  • Seven consecutive away Premier League victories for Manchester United, coming from behind to secure all three of their away wins so far this term.
  • Here at St Mary’s, Manchester United are unbeaten in their past nine league visits (W5 D4) since a 1-0 defeat in August 2003.

Southampton, therefore, look a very big price. Man Utd‘s seven-game winning away streak has clearly been factored into their odds here, while the goals have undoubtedly flowed across their three away fixtures this season, netting three or more at Brighton, Everton and Newcastle. Yet Southampton frustrated them home (1-1) and away (2-2) last term, and they are unquestionably a better, more confident side now.
