Southampton – Stubborn Saints becoming difficult to beat?

If results in previous rounds can serve as a useful barometer for what we can expect when the FA Cup fifth round gets underway, this tie could prove troublesome for Ralph Hasenhuttl and his in-form Southampton team. The Saints have needed extra-time to oust the Championship duo of Swansea City and Coventry City, winning 3-2 away to the former and 2-1 here at St Mary’s against The Sky Blues.

In the league, though, this is a collection of players arguably at the peak of its powers. Friday’s comfortable 2-0 victory at home to Norwich City made it three wins in an unbeaten five-match sequence, losing one of their last ten top-flight fixtures (W5 D4). This includes a 3-2 win over Wednesday’s opponents at London Stadium on Boxing Day, breaking an eight-game winless sequence versus the Hammers.

Key Stat: Southampton have scored in each of their past 12 competitive matches, and in all of their previous 11 at St Mary’s.

West Ham – Weary Hammers lacking consistency?

David Moyes’ men were even less convincing in reaching the fifth round for only a second time in six seasons, requiring an additional thirty minutes to see of the gutsy challenge of non-league Kidderminster last time out in the competition. Having seen off Leeds United 2-0 at home, West Ham then needed late strikes from Declan Rice and Jarrod Bowen to avoid one of the FA Cup’s greatest upsets.

Sunday’s 1-0 victory against Wolves at London Stadium felt hugely important within the context of the Champions League race. It also stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to five, although that is now just two wins inside 90 minutes across their last seven contests (W2 D3 L2). Moreover, their recovery time is a lot shorter compared with opponents Southampton, who were in action last Friday.

Key Stat: There have been Under 2.5 Goals in five of West Ham’s last six matches (results after extra-time not included), and in seven of their last nine.

Southampton Vs West Ham Betting Advice

An additional 48 hours recuperation should stand Southampton in good stead for this fifth round FA Cup tie. The Saints are also in excellent form, currently unbeaten in six (W3 D3 at 90 minutes). They last lost any game here at St Mary’s in September, winning five and drawing six of eleven subsequent fixtures at their south coast residence. At 7/10 in the Draw No Bet market, the hosts look a fair price.

Southampton Vs West Ham – Key Facts:

  • These teams are meeting for a third time this season. Southampton are yet to lose in these contests, following up a 0-0 draw here at St Mary’s in September by winning 3-2 at London Stadium in December.
  • Prior to that 3-2 scoreline in the capital, though, West Ham were unbeaten in eight head-to-head encounters (W6 D2). They’ve not lost at St Mary’s since August 2017 (W2 D2).
  • Southampton have needed to come from behind to progress in each round so far, doing so against Swansea City and Coventry City.

West Ham aren’t as consistent these days as signs of an arduous campaign appear to be catching up with them. Games will start coming thick and fast soon as well, what with their European campaign resuming in little over a week. So there could be some rotation for this, which would naturally hamper their chances. Away from home the Hammers boast just two wins in nine (D3 L4), so they are certainly vulnerable.
