Southend United will fancy their chances of racking up another home win at their Roots Hall ground on Tuesday night when they play host to League Two side, Newport County, as the hosts come in fresh from an opening day win.
Southend scored a 2-1 home win over Blackburn Rovers in their League One season opener with goals from Leonard and Kightly which ruined the visitors’ start to life in the English third tier. Southend just missed out on a play-off place at the end of last season as they finished just one point behind Millwall, who eventually gained promotion to the Championship.
The Shrimps possessed a pretty solid record at Roots Hall last season, losing just five games in all, and manager Phil Brown has the likes of Cox and Robinson up front in attack, as well as former Celtic and West Brom striker, Marc-Antoine Fortune.
Visitors Newport County started their new League Two season off with a point away at Stevenage in an entertaining 3-3 draw, but they staged a great comeback as they trailed 3-1 with just 20 minutes left remaining on the clock.
Newport narrowly avoided relegation from League Two at the end of last season, and they needed to win on the last day of the season which they duly did with a 2-1 home win over Notts County, and although Hartlepool also won, it was enough to send Pools down.
However, The Exiles are one of the clubs tipped to struggle again this season in the English fourth tier, and I fancy Southend may well be too strong for them here.
