Spain U21 Preview – Can Spain avenge defeat from two years ago?

Since losing their first game of the competition to Italy, this Spanish team have went from strength to strength. A loss in this sort of format (where only the team who finishes top of each group is guaranteed qualification) ramps up the pressure significantly for the remaining games. Spain have dealt with that impeccably and made it through to their third final in four attempts. Having dismantled Poland 5-0 to ensure top spot in their section, the Spaniards went up another level in the semi-final. It’s fair to say France had not hit the heights expected of them but Spain romped to a 4-1 win. What was also telling from that game is that the goals were scored by four difference players. It’s so often a trait of the most successful Spanish teams to share the goals and this team are another example of it.

Have they got another level to go to in the final?!

Germany U21 – Will Germany rule Europe once again?

In the preview of Germany’s semi-final against Romania I alluded to the mentality that is so apparent in this young German side. That winning mentality was there for all to see in their last four game at various stages. Having taken a very early lead only to be down at half-time it could easily have rocked the team. To their immense credit, Germany responded in the second half and it was as much their mental endurance as their physical fitness that won them the game. A 4-2 score line probably doesn’t do the Romanians justice, but Germany know how to win games. And when it gets into a battle they tend to come up with the answers. It was also the third time in four games whereby Germany have scored at least three goals in a game at this competition.

The Germans have never retained this trophy and if they managed it tomorrow would join Spain, England, Italy and Netherlands in achieving that feat.

Spain U21 v Germany U21 Betting Advice

There are stark similarities between this final and the one played two years ago. Heading into that game Spain were fancied by many to prevail due to their style of football and performances in the competition en route to the final. Germany were less impressive in that competition and although that’s not necessarily the case here, they are still underdogs. It’s clearly a tag that doesn’t bother them though. It’s also a clash of different styles which does make for a very intriguing game.

One of the keys to Germany’s win in 2017 was the early goal scored. It allowed them to protect a lead, allow Spain to come on to them and deny their opponents the space they crave to create. It would be an obvious advantage if they are able to get that again but it’s easier said than done. Spain were scintillating against France and are playing with a confidence which makes them very hard to bet against. Germany’s record in finals is a worry but the quality of football and standard of Spain’s game is such that they can win this in 90 minutes. Becoming the joint-highest winners in competition history along with Italy.
