SPAL Preview – Only wins can spare them the drop?

The situation as it stands is rather bleak for SPAL (19th – W5 D3 L18), who resume the Serie A campaign second-from-bottom and with lots of work to be doing in order to make up the seven points needed on safety. It looks a tall order for a side with only five wins all season (26 games), the fewest goals scored of all sides (20) and, according to Infogol, the third worst overall process in the entire league.

Had Luigi Di Biagio’s team not beaten Parma 1-0 on the road in their final fixture played before the pandemic curtailed the season in March, their prospects of avoiding relegation would have appeared decidedly more grim. That is one positive they can cling onto as they prepare to take on a Cagliari side which beat them 2-0 in Sardinia last October but whose own momentum stalled before the break.

Whether the Biancazzuri (White and Blues) can capitalise on Tuesday, at their Stadio Paolo Mazza, is however dubious. That is because SPAL retain a rather retched home record in 2019/20, winning only two of twelve Serie A fixtures so far (W2 D2 L8) which includes a current run of five consecutive defeats. Their last said win was over Parma – clearly a favourite opponent of theirs – back at the start of October.

Cagliari Preview – Post-Covid collapse still in effect?

It is difficult to fathom how a side which began the season in such scintillating fashion has managed to capitulate so spectacularly. There were talks of qualifying for Europe. Right now even a top half finish looks beyond them, with Cagliari (12th – W8 D8 L10) remaining as they were after Saturday’s 2-1 loss away to Hellas Verona – a 12th consecutive game in Serie A without registering a win for Walter Zenga’s faltering charges.

Pinpointing how and why it has gone drastically wrong isn’t straightforward, however, the origin stems from a late collapse at home to Lazio when two goals in added on time consigned them to a 2-1 defeat. That was before Christmas, on 16 December. The Sardinians would not win a single league game thereafter, collecting four of the last 36 points that were on offer to drop out of the conversation for Europe and into mid-table obscurity.

The break should have been ideal really. A chance to reset and start afresh of sorts. Instead, they were 2-0 down within the opening 26 minutes of their first fixture back. Clearly time hasn’t been a great healer in this instance. A trip to 19th-placed SPAL presents an opportunity to rediscover that winning vibe, though this is now a Cagliari outfit without an away win since upsetting Atalanta in Bergamo in November (record on the road since: D4 L3).

SPAL VS Cagliari Betting Advice

Without the intervention of the COVID-19 break that was enforced on Serie A, SPAL would have entered into this fixture on the back of a recent win after previously enduring a slump consisting of five successive defeats. Any momentum is likely to have subsided, however, this remains an excellent winning opportunity against a Cagliari side in disarray following a twelve game run without managing a w

SPAL Vs Cagliari – Key Facts

  • Cagliari are now 12 Serie A games without a win (D4 L7), with seven of those contests featuring goals for both teams.
  • SPAL have gone thirteen matches in Serie A since last drawing (W3 L10), with nine of those games ending with both teams scoring.
  • The spoils were that of Cagliari when these sides met in Sardinia on Matchday 8, despite SPAL winning the xG battle: CAG 0.98 – 1.05 SPAL.

Both teams scoring has a healthy strike rate with both these teams: SPAL in 54% overall but rising to 67% at home, while Cagliari deliver 69% of the time irrespective of the location. So in a contest whereby no side boasts any meaningful form to work with, plumping for goals could be the best bet.
