St Etienne Preview – Puel’s men finally stopped in their tracks?

An excellent start to the Ligue 1 season was always bound to end sooner rather than later for Saint-Etienne. This, after all, is a playing collective not all that different from the one which finished 2019/20 dismally, when failing to win any of their final seven fixtures to round off a turbulent campaign in 17th.

That their fine start came to a halt last time out in Nantes was frustrating, though, and not because the 2-2 draw in isolation was a bad outcome for Claude Puel and his team. In fact, they were slightly fortunate to have taken a point, as well as scoring twice, from a game in which they came out second best on the Expected Goals front: NAN 1.29 – 0.75 ETI. Yet they held a commanding 2-0 lead with less than 25 minutes remaining.

Les Verts have now scored exactly two goals in all four Ligue 1 games this season, having previously done so in their wins over Lorient, Strasbourg and, impressively, away to a Marseille side who had recently beaten French champions PSG. Meanwhile, the two goals they conceded in Nantes were the first they’ve conceded so far this season.

Rennes Preview – Excitement guaranteed at both ends of the pitch?

Julien Stephan’s Rennes side would see out 2019/20 in supreme fashion, wrapping up Champions League qualification by taking maximum points from their final three league games – the latter of those a 5-0 demolition job on Montpellier – to finish in third. Of course, they didn’t know at the time that those would be their final encounters of a Ligue 1 campaign that was ultimately curtailed, prematurely some would say.

It has been a case of more of the same in 2020/21. Aside from a 1-1 draw in Lille on Matchday 1, and the fact they are still to keep a clean sheet, Rennes have barely put a foot wrong. Last week’s battling display at home to AS Monaco banked them their third win on the trot, to go with previous triumphs against Montpellier (2-1) and Nimes (2-4), as two goals inside the final ten minutes cancelled out a first-half deficit.

Like their upcoming opponents though, Rennes were a little fortunate to edge a tight contest (xG: REN 1.06 – 1 MON) which could have gone either way. Moreover, they’ve now both scored and conceded in all four matches this season, suggesting that their defensive resilience from the previous season, when shipping the same amount of goals (24 in 28 games) as perennial champions PSG, hasn’t carried over into this one.

St. Etienne Vs Rennes Betting Advice

A top of the table clash. Neither has succumbed to a defeat thus far, dropping a point apiece across their respective four Ligue 1 matches to occupy the top two spots at this early stage. I quite like the look of goals. Saint-Etienne have notched exactly two in all of their contests up until now while Rennes have netted one more in total (9), having seen both teams score in all four of their completed fixtures.

St Etienne Vs Rennes – Key Facts

  • With three wins and a draw from their first four matches, this now represents the best start to a Ligue 1 season for St Etienne since 1979/80.
  • Stretching into last season, Rennes have now gone their last seven Ligue 1 games without losing, winning the last three despite conceding on at least one occasion in all three.
  • Rennes are unbeaten versus St Etienne in their last seven Ligue 1 meetings (W3 D4), while they haven’t lost as the away side since a 2-0 loss in October 2012 (D6 since).

History favours the visitors, who last lost a Ligue 1 fixture with Saint-Etienne in February 2016 (0-1 at home), with their record since then W3 D4. Rennes haven’t tasted defeat on the road in this fixture for almost eight years, though that is due to the fact each of the last six league meetings held at Etienne’s Stade Geoffroy-Guichard has finished in a draw – the last four of those were score draws. 2-2 Draw.
