St Gallen Preview – Can St Gallen build on positive restart?
A 2-1 win away from home at Sion saw Thursday’s hosts, St Gallen, resume their successful campaign in the Swiss Super league with a welcome three points after they’d failed to win their last two matches before the season was put on hold.
A 1-0 defeat away from home at Luzern and a 3-3 draw at home with Young Boys had threatened to undo the previous good work by St Gallen and also their top spot in the Super League but the win at Sion helped restore St Gallen to the top of the Swiss top flight, albeit on goal difference.
However, St Gallen now have the opportunity to push on and perhaps open up a lead at the top of the Super League when they host Zurich, and with a fairly solid home record of 7-2-3 27/16 behind them along with just one defeat out of their last 10 matches, the hosts may well fancy their chances of avenging an earlier 3-1 defeat to Zurich back in mid-December.

6th placed Zurich appear to have very little to play for in this upcoming clash against Super League leaders, St Gallen, as the visitors sit in mid-table mediocrity and eight points adrift of 3rd placed Basel, while also holding a comfortable 10-point lead above the relegation play-off contenders, Neuchatel Xamax.
Further evidence that Zurich may have subconsciously switch off is the fact that the visitors have failed to win any of their last six matches overall in the Swiss top flight, and indeed, have managed to register just one win from their last eight matches.
Zurich possess an overall away record which stands at 4-3-5 11/20 but while on the surface this appears to be fairly reasonable, Zurich have lost their last two away matches on the trot having suffered defeats at Servette and Young Boys in 4-1 and 3-2 losses respectively.
