St Johnstone and Dundee have a combined 14 straight losses in the Premiership so it’s fair to say something will have to give as the two strugglers meet on Wednesday night.

St Johnstone Preview – Can bottom of the table Saints win their first game since October?

Saturday’s embarrassing defeat away to League Two Kelty Hearts was a surprise in that it was the Scottish Cup holders going out at the first time of asking against a team three divisions below them. However, considering Saints’ current form, it was hardly shocking. Callum Davidson’s men have now lost 10 straight matches – eight of them in the league. It is a dire run of form and sees them sitting two points from safety. The one crumb of comfort for them is they are not further adrift. A win here would lift them above Dundee.

Pressure was mounting on Davidson before the weekend defeat and it is even greater now. Despite the cup heroics last season, this losing run cannot go on forever without something being changed.

Their last win came at the end of October when beating Dundee United at Tannadice and their last win at home was against the blue half of Dundee when winning 3-1 earlier that month. It remains their only home win of the campaign and just one of the four they managed in the whole of 2021 at McDiarmid Park.

A longstanding issue for this St Johnstone team is scoring goals. Nadir Ciftci was brought in earlier in January to help them with that but they have now drawn a blank in 10 of their last 15 matches and have scored at least six less than any other team in the Premiership.

Dundee Preview – Will Dundee build on their narrow cup win to move further clear of opponents?

Dundee have not had their troubles to seek off the field but they were picking up enough points for those problems not to become distractions. Now, however, they are becoming embroiled in what’s looking more and more like a two-way battle to avoid the drop. Saturday did bring a rare win of late but only narrowly away to League One Dumbarton – requiring a penalty from Leigh Griffiths.

Returning to league action on Wednesday, they are now hoping to build on that win by ending a run of six defeats. The most recent of them coming away to Livingston in their first game back following the winter break.

The Dens Park club have the worst away record in the Scottish top-flight – picking up just four points from a possible 33 on their travels. Their only win on the road in the league this season was on the same day that Saints last won. Since then they have lost five straight away, conceding 11 goals in the process.

With the derby against United to come next midweek, they really do want to build some momentum by getting the better of another of their old foes.

St Johnstone vs Dundee Betting Advice

It could hardly be bleaker for either side going by their recent form. Failure to build from a position of strength for Saints and losing key players are the key reasons for their dramatic fall whilst Dundee’s desire to fill their team with some challenging characters does not appear to be paying off.

Regardless of the reasons, both teams just need to find a way to win. The hosts won seven straight against Dundee but they did lose the most recent meetings – 1-0 at the beginning of December.

Key Facts –  St Johnstone vs Dundee Betting Tip

  • St Johnstone have failed to score in 10 of their last 15 games in all competitions
  • Dundee have lost six straight games in the Scottish Premiership
  • Saints have won seven of the last eight meetings between the two but lost the most recent encounter

You can’t trust either of these teams to get the win they so desperately need whilst a draw doesn’t really do much for either. Instead, the league’s lowest scorers against the league’s worst away attack suggests a game with limited chances and goals. Take under 2.5 goals in this one.
