St Johnstone have maximum points and can take control of this group against Tayside rivals Dundee United who have been underwhelming in this competition so far.

St Johnstone Preview – Will Saints make it three wins from three and stay top of the section?

It’s not been an instant impact but Callum Davidson is beginning to find his feet as St Johnstone manager. Arriving in the summer, it was always likely to take a bit of time for the Perth club to transition following such a long time under Tommy Wright. Davidson will prepare his team against Dundee United on the back of a five match unbeaten run which includes two wins in this competition.

Friday night’s 1-0 win at home to Kilmarnock moved them level on points with that opponent and into eighth spot in what is a very congested part of the table. Being international week, their focus is now on the League Cup and sealing qualification.

Away to Kelty Hearts and at home to Brechin are games which you expect a Premiership club to win and the Saints have done that with little drama. However their last two games in the section are going to be more testing. First up is this Tayside derby against top-flight opposition before a tricky looking visit to Peterhead who also have maximum points.
What will be particularly pleasing for Davidson is that this team have kept three consecutive clean sheets at home. For a team who are not prolific scorers, that sort of defensive record is very important.

Dundee United Preview – Can United find the win needed to put them back in the mix for qualification?

United are another team under the care of a new manager for this season and Micky Mellon will also be content with how things are going. The Tangerines sit in fifth spot and although some way off fourth place Hibs, they are also three points clear of sixth place and the pack of teams who sit on 14 points. Friday’s draw away to St Mirren means they too are unbeaten in five games.

That run comes on the back of a hugely disappointing defeat at home to League One Peterhead which has put them under pressure in terms of progressing from the group.

Similar to St Johnstone, Dundee United have been excellent defensively of late and conceded just one goal in their last five matches. That came in a 2-1 win at home to Ross County. The other three league games have finished goalless draws in this run – one of which was against St Johnstone towards the end of October.

This will be United’s last game in the section having already beaten Kelty and Brechin. Anything less than a win would put their qualification chances in real doubt.

St Johnstone vs Dundee United Betting Advice

This is something of a derby game but as alluded to above, there was nothing to choose between the teams when they met at McDiarmid Park last month. Although it’s a change of competition, it’s likely that this will be another close contest. The home team could afford to draw and look for three points on Saturday but it is pretty much a must win for the visitors.

Key Facts – St Johnstone vs Dundee United Betting Tip

  • St Johnstone have won both their League Cup games so far with victories against Kelty and Brechin
  • Dundee United’s surprise defeat to Peterhead has dented their hopes of qualifying
  • The teams contested a goalless draw in the Scottish Premiership at this ground last month

Recent form shows you where the strengths of these two teams lie. Both are adept at keeping clean sheets but have not quite found the right balance in an attacking sense. St Johnstone’s only home game that has had more than two goals in it was the 7-0 win over hapless Brechin. And with five of United’s last six also going under 2.5, that seems the logical way to go here.
