St Johnstone Preview – Are Saints set to make it a historic cup double?

St Johnstone are attempting to mark their best ever season by winning a cup double following their League Cup success earlier this year – a competition which they actually knocked Hibernian out of en route to the final. The Saints also clinched European football for next season via a fifth place finish in the Scottish Premiership so it’s been a tremendous campaign to this point.

The fact that it’s also Callum Davidson’s first season in charge of the club makes it all the more impressive.

St Johnstone have been involved in plenty of battles to reach Saturday’s showpiece with their only really comfortable game being a 2-0 win over League One Clyde. The most memorable match was the quarter-final defeat of Rangers at Ibrox, scoring in the final seconds to take the match to extra-time before eventually prevailing on penalties. They then went on to defeat St Mirren 2-1 in the semi-final with goals coming from Chris Kane and Glenn Middleton.

Saints last and only winning Scottish Cup run was back in 2014 when Davidson was assistant to then manager Tommy Wright. They were underdogs going into that final as well but performed on the day to beat Dundee United 2-0 at Celtic Park. So they have proven themselves capable of handling the big occasion.

Hibernian Preview – Can Hibs repeat their victory of five years ago?

Hibs supporters were delighted to end what was 114 years wait for a Scottish Cup when beating Rangers in dramatic circumstances in the 2016 final. They have been to several semi-finals since then across both domestic cup competitions but this is the closest they have come to winning it again. Jack Ross must now lead his players over the final hurdle and cap what has been a really strong season for the Easter Road club.

Hibs are guaranteed European football next season having finished third in the league but there’s no doubting the prospect of silverware is what all concerned are aiming for.

Overall it’s been a more straightforward passage to the final with comfortable wins away to Queen of the South and Stranraer and then looking set for another of those when two goals up at home to Motherwell. They eventually needed penalties to go through to the semi-finals but that experience may just have hardened this squad.

Dundee United proved to be little threat in the semi-final earlier this month and Ross will hope that banishes any doubt that this Hibs team can’t handle playing in big matches at Hampden – they had lost their last five games at the national stadium before that win.

St Johnstone vs Hibernian Betting Advice

Whilst it’s Hibs who are favourite for victory on Saturday, it’s St Johnstone who have had the upper hand in recent meetings. Davidson has led his team to three straight wins over their opponents – keeping clean sheets in all of them including that convincing 3-0 win at Hampden in the League Cup back in January.

Jack Ross will be hoping his team are due one over Saints.

Key Facts – St Johnstone vs Hibernian Betting Tip

  • St Johnstone are looking to do a famous cup double having won the League Cup earlier in the season
  • Hibernian stopped a run of five straight defeats at Hampden when defeating Dundee United in the semi-final
  • Saints have won the last three meetings between the clubs including a 3-0 success in the semi-final of the League Cup

St Johnstone have shown they are capable of handling the occasion in these games and their defence is excellent so Hibs will have to be at their best if they are to win. There is little to choose between the teams and that may see extra time or even penalties required to pick a winner. Back the draw here.
